DIALEKT JAKO WYZWANIE TRANSLATORSKIE W DWÓCH POLSKICH PRZEKŁADACH POWIEŚCI TERRY’EGO PRATCHETTA WOLNI CIUT LUDZIE

Autorka pracy analizuje dwa polskie tłumaczenia powieści Terry’ego Pratchetta pod tytułem Wolni Ciut Ludzie (inna wersja: Wolni Ciutludzie) ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem podejścia tłumaczy do dialektu, którym posługują się główni bohaterowie książki - bajkowe stworzenia nazywane Nac Mac Figlami. W pierwszym rozdziale pracy omówiono teoretyczne aspekty odmian języka, takich jak idiolekt czy dialekt geograficzny, a także znaczenie dialektu literackiego w procesie kreowania bohatera. W dalszej części nakreślono problemy związane z przekładem dialektu literackiego jak i strategie, które mogą zostać zastosowane przez tłumaczy. Ponadto dokonano analizy języka bohaterów powieści oraz funkcji, jakie pełni on w tym utworze. Trzeci rozdział pracy poświęcony został analizie porównawczej fragmentów dwóch polskich tłumaczeń, a także podkreśleniu mocnych i słabych stron strategii zastosowanych przez obu tłumaczy: Dorotę Malinowską-Grupińską oraz Piotra W. Cholewę. W ostatnim rozdziale omówiono ożywioną reakcję czytelników na polskie tłumaczenia powieści.

The author of the thesis analyzes two Polish translations of Terry Pratchett’s novel titled The Wee Free Men with special regard to their treatment of the dialect used by the main characters of the novel: fairy-like creatures called the Nac Mac Feegles. The first chapter of the study discusses some theoretical aspects of language varieties, such as idiolect or geographical dialect and emphasizes the importance of literary dialect in character-creation process. In the second chapter of the paper problems and strategies related to translating language varietes are scrutinized. Furthermore, the language used by the characters of The Wee Free Men is discussed, as well as the functions it fulfills in the plot. The third section of the thesis is devoted to the comparative analysis of passages from two Polish translations of Terry Pratchett’s novel as well as to the pros and cons of the strategies employed by the translators: Dorota Malinowska-Grupińska and Piotr W. Cholewa. Finally, readers’ heated response to the Polish translations of the novel is examined.
