Ethnographic narration in prose and film. Based on the selected examples

Thesis is based on the analysis of ethnographic prose and film containing ethnographic topics. The work is divided into two parts. The first, devoted to prose, discusses Nigel Barley field research, focusing on the conditions of the experience of the ethnographer. Titles discussed include: “The innocent anthropologist. A notes from a Mud Hut”, “A plague of Catepillars”, and, “Not a hazardous sport”. On this example thesis discusses the dominant paradigm in contemporary literature, in which the description of field is combined with theoretical plots. The second part discusses the problem of narrative film and question of the relationships of visuality and ethnography. The analysis is based on the film “Meet the Natives”. Topics presented in this part are: themes borrowed from the traditional ethnography, and way of their functioning in a popular film. To this thesis was also attached annex discussing the role of photography in the anthropological discourse – based on the example of the work of Bronislaw Malinowski.

Praca opiera się na analizie pisarstwa etnograficznego oraz filmu o tematyce etnograficznej. Praca została podzielona na dwie części. Pierwsza, poświęcona prozie, omawia badania terenowe Nigela Barleya, skupiając się na warunkach doświadczenia etnografa. Omawiane tytuły to: „Niewinny antropolog. Notatki z glinianej chatki”, „Plaga gąsienic. Powrót do afrykańskiego buszu” oraz „Bezpieczny sport”. Na przykładzie tej nowoczesnej monografii terenowej omówione zostało dominujące we współczesnym paradygmacie piśmiennictwo, w którym opis badań terenowych łączony jest z wątkami teoretycznymi. Druga część pracy omawia narrację filmową oraz problem związków wizualności i etnografii. Analiza oparta jest na filmie „Meet the Natives”. Tematami poruszanymi w tej części są: wątki zapożyczone od tradycyjnej etnografii, a także sposób ich funkcjonowania w filmie przeznaczonym dla odbiorcy masowego. Do pracy dołączony został również aneks dotyczący roli fotografii w dyskursie antropologicznym na przykładzie prac Bronisława Malinowskiego.
