SUMMARYSense of Frustration in the Chosen American and English NovelsThe aim of the present thesis is to analyze the problem of frustration in the novels of S. Maugham, S.Fitzgerald and J. Cheever. The novel The Painted Veil describes the frustration of the protagonist entangled in an unhappy marriage and a disappointing affair. After many disillusionments she accompanies her husband to the interior of China to the cholera stricken provinces where, confronted with death and suffering, she finds inner balance.Similarly, in the novel Of Human Bondage the protagonist through unhappy childhood and a humiliating relationship discovers his vocation, medicine. The novel is largely autobiographical and the main character’s frustration is based on the experiences of the author. In the most famous novel by S. Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby, frustration also results from unhappy love. The protagonist cannot accept loosing the love of his youth and dedicates his whole life to winning his beloved woman. Finally ignored by her he dies as a result of tragic mistake. Tender is the Night discusses a slow downfall of a psychiatrist who marries his patient. Despite the initial enchantment with his wife the relationship ruins the protagonist psychologically and professionally. As in The Great Gatsby the novel contains autobiographical elements based on the novelist` s unhappy marriage with his mentally ill wife Zelda.The novels of J. Cheever The Wapshot Chronicle and The Wapshot Scandal are a saga describing two generations of the Wapshot family. The Wapshot Chronicle introduces the reader into the world of a provincial and wealthy family signalling the frustration felt by the family members, and its sequel The Wapshot Scandal shows the members of the same family as they approach financial and moral downfall symbolised by the death of the head of the family.
