Travertines and tufas of the Spiš region (northern Slovakia)

Obserwacje geologiczne przeprowadzone na obszarze Spisza w północnej Słowacji wykazały zróżnicowane morfologiczne trawertynów i martwic wapiennych oraz odmian litologicznych i facji tych osadów. Trawertyny występują w formie kopalnej, a także notuje się ich współczesny wzrost. Najliczniej występują w formie kopców (rejon Gánovce i Ondrej- Hôrka). Tworzą tam kaskady na stokach wzniesień lub starszych budowli trawertynowych (rejon Vyšné Ružbachy) oraz wypełnienia w morfologicznych zagłębieniach w podłożu skalnym. Wśród odmian litologicznych dominują naskorupienia krystaliczne, trawertyny krzaczkowe oraz trzcinowe. Podrzędnie występują inkrustowane kalcytem bąble po gazie, kry kalcytowe, trawertyny pizoidowe oraz litoklastyczne. Osady te reprezentują facje źródłowe, proksymalne oraz dystalne systemów depozycyjnych kopców, teras stokowych i systemu morfologicznych zagłębień. Występowanie martwic wapiennych na badanym obszarze jest ograniczone wyłącznie do stanowiska w zakolu rzeki Rieka w Vyšnych Ružbachach, gdzie tworzą pokrywy w jej korycie. W osadach tych obserwuje się licznie rośliny, przede wszystkim glony, które decydują o specyficznej strukturze osadu.

Geological observations conducted in the Spis region in northern Slovakia revealed diverse morphological features of travertines and calcareous tufas, as well as various lithological types and facies of these deposits. The travertines occur in fossil form, and contemporary growth of travertine is also noted. They are most abundant in the form of mounds (in the Gánovce and Ondrej-Hôrka region). They form cascades on the slopes of hills or older travertine structures (in the Vyšné Ružbachy region), as well as fillings in morphological depressions in the bedrock. Among the lithological variations, crystalline crust travertines, shrub travertines, and reed travertines dominate. Subordinately, there are coated bubble travertines, paper-thin raft travertines, pisoid travertines, as well as lithoclast travertines. These deposits represent facies of source, proximal, and distal depositional systems of mounds, slope terraces, and morphological depressions. The occurrence of calcareous tufas in the studied area is limited exclusively to the site in the meander of the Rieka River in Vyšné Ružbachy, where they form covers in its channel. Numerous plants, primarily algae, are observed in these deposits, which contribute to the specific structure of the sediment.
