Poszukiwanie Doskonałości i Spełnienia w Poezji W.H. Audena

Poezja W. H. Audena, brytyjskiego poety dwudziestego wieku, od samego początku zachwycała i prowokowała do głębokich przemyśleń. Jednym z motywów przejawiających się często w jego wierszach jest poszukiwanie doskonałości i spełnienia. Przedstawiona praca magisterska stanowi przestrzeń do analizy czy poecie udało się osiągnąć cel i odnaleźć je przy pomocy swojej poezji. Pierwsza część pracy jest poświęcona teoretycznemu omówieniu głównych podziałów twórczości poety, dokonanych przez znamienitych znawców W. H. Audena, takich jak Edward Mendelson, John Blair czy Arthur Kirsch. Poza przedstawieniem najczęściej spotykanego w opracowaniach naukowych podziału, pierwsza część pracy aspiruje również do zaznajomienia czytelnika z podstawowymi założeniami filozofii Sørena Kierkegaarda. Założenia te stanowiły kanwę do zaproponowania w niniejszej pracy alternatywnego podziału twórczości Audena. W drugiej części pracy interpretacja skupia się na szesnastu wierszach, które stanowią wzorcowe przykłady stanowisk poety w danych okresach jego życia i twórczości. Bada ona filozoficzne rozważania Audena na temat natury doskonałości i różnych dróg, którymi ludzie podążają w celu doznania spełnienia, od miłości i religii po twórczość artystyczną i zaangażowanie polityczne. Ostatnia część pracy to omówienie potencjalnych trudności, z którymi może się mierzyć polski tłumacz zajmujący się przekładem poezji W. H. Audena. Materiał do analizy stanowią tu tłumaczenia wykonane przez Stanisława Barańczaka oraz autorki niniejszej pracy magisterskiej. Całość studium ma na celu ukazanie ewolucji poglądów oraz kunsztu niezwykle wrażliwego poety jak i rozważenie czy osiągnięcie doskonałości i spełnienia było dla W. H. Audena możliwe.

The poetry of W. H. Auden, a distinguished British poet of the 20th century, has delighted and provoked deep thought from the very beginning. The quest for perfection and fulfilment is one of the often manifested motifs in his poems. This thesis provides a space to analyze whether the poet succeeded in finding them within his poetry. The first part of the thesis is devoted to a theoretical discussion of the main divisions of the poet's work, made by notable experts on W. H. Auden, such as Edward Mendelson, John Blair and Arthur Kirsch. In addition to presenting the division which is most common in research studies and papers, the first part of this dissertation also aspires to acquaint the reader with the basis of Søren Kierkegaard's philosophy. Kierkegaard’s views formed the canvas for proposing and presenting in this thesis an alternative division of Auden's work. In the second part of the dissertation, the analysis focuses on sixteen poems that are representative examples of the poet's views during the given periods of his life. It explores Auden's philosophical reflections on the nature of perfection and the various paths people take to experience fulfilment, from love and religion to artistic creation and political involvement. The last part of the thesis is a discussion on potential difficulties that a Polish translator may encounter while translating W. H. Auden's poetry. The overview is based on the translations made by Stanislaw Baranczak and the author of this thesis. The aim of the present thesis is to demonstrate the evolution of views and profundity of the extremely sensitive poet as well as to consider whether the achievement of perfection and fulfilment was possible for W. H. Auden.
