Formation of the foriegn policy program and directions of the Japanese expansion in the Meiji period

Tematem mojej pracy jest ekspansja państwa japońskiego w okresie Meiji. W epoce tej Japonia przeszła błyskawiczną przemianę od społeczeństwa feudalnego do industrialnego, a elity polityczne poprowadziły ją do sukcesów na arenie międzynarodowej. Zacofany i samoizolujący się kraj, nie potrafiący oprzeć się dominacji państw europejskich, stać się miał w krótkim czasie regionalnym mocarstwem, aspirującym do odegrania roli w polityce światowej. Moja praca składa się czterech rozdziałów. Pierwszy rozdział stanowi wprowadzenie i przedstawia sytuację geograficzno-polityczną Japonii w okresie siogunatu, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem pierwszej połowy XIX wieku, w której to wydarzenia doprowadziły do załamania się władzy sioguna. Drugi rozdział dotyczy polityki zagranicznej Nipponu w okresie od restauracji władzy cesarskiej aż do 1885 roku - opisuje pierwsze japońskie próby renegocjacji traktatów nierównoprawnych oraz powoli rozpoczynającą się rywalizację o Koreę. Trzeci rozdział opisuje nabierającą tempa rywalizację o Koreę z Chinami, która zakończyła się wojną, a także powolne pojawianie się Rosji w grze o dominację na Dalekim Wschodzie. Ostatni rozdział przybliża rywalizację Japonii z państwem carów, a także próby znalezienia przez Nippon alianta. W tle cały czas pojawiają się wątki chiński i koreański. Rozdział kończy się podsumowaniem wojny z Rosją. W zakończeniu starałem się zaprezentować nie tylko ewolucję stosunku japońskich polityków epoki Meiji do Zachodu, ale także podać główne przyczyny ekspansji zewnętrznej.

The aim of this thesis is to present the expansion of the Japanese state in the Meiji period. In this period Japan undergo a rapid change from the feudal society to the industrialised one, and the ruling class guided the Japanese state to the triumphs on the international stage. Uncivilizied and self-isolating country that could not withstand the European domination in the short period of time become a regional power with the aspirations to obtaining the Great Power status. The thesis consists of four chapters. First one is an introduction to the topic which contains information about the geopolitical situation of Japan during Edo period and more specifically the 1st half of the 19th century in which the series of events lead to the fall of the shogunate. The second chapter describes the foreign policy of the Nippon from the period of restoration the imperial power to the year of 1885. It also characterizes the first Japaneses attempts to renegotiate the unequal treaties and the beginning of the rivalry for Korea. Next chapter aims at presenting the development of the rivalry for Korea with China that will eventually lead to the war and also tries to show the slow revealment of the Russian Empire in the game of the dominance in the Far East. The last chapter depicts the rivalry between Japan and Russia which is connected to the Japanese efforts to get an ally. In the background there are still present Korean and Chinese threads. The chapter is closed with the summarization of the Russo-Japanese War. The conclusion of this thesis outlines not only the evolution of the Japanese politician attitudes toward the West during Meiji period but also shows that the main reasons for the external expansion.
