Medieval manuscripts from the book collections in Kraków University Halls of Residence

Artykuł przedstawia odnalezione rękopisy i stare druki należące do średniowiecznych księgozbiorów bur Uniwersytetu Krakowskiego. Dzięki kwerendzie przeprowadzonej w Bibliotece Jagiellońskiej na podstawie not proweniencyjnych, testamentów i innych zapisek zostało odnalezionych 19 obiektów. Publikacja omawia proces powstania tychże księgozbiorów oraz ich powiększania, a także wyjaśnia, dlaczego tak niewiele obiektów dotrwało do naszych czasów. Centralną części publikacji stanowi lista dzieł znajdujących się w poszczególnych kolekcjach wraz z próbą ustalenia stopnia ich przydatności dla społeczności uniwersyteckiej. Poza prezentacją poszczególnych tytułów dużo uwagi poświęcone zostało tekstom, które powstały w bursach. Kolofony niekiedy zawierają informacje o miejscu i czasie ich powstania, imieniu skryby i jego stopniach naukowych, a sporadycznie także o czytelniku, na którego zlecenie dane dzieło zostało przepisane. Wyniki badań potwierdzają dotychczasowe opinie na temat księgozbiorów burs uniwersyteckich. Wprawdzie ich zasób przedstawia się skromnie w porównaniu do kolegiów, niemniej znajdujące się w nich dzieła służyły tym samym celom jako pomoc dla profesorów i studentów do nauczania i studiowania. Różnorodny i wyjątkowy charakter poszczególnych dzieł, które się w nich znajdują, pozwalają na wzbogacenie wiedzy na temat kultury literackiej na Uniwersytecie Krakowskim. Szczególnie istotnym wkładem mieszkańców burs były starania o zachowanie dorobku intelektualnego krakowskich uczonych, poprzez kopiowanie ich wykładów i pism.

The present paper introduces discovered manuscripts and antique prints belonging to the medieval book collection from Kraków University’s halls of residence. As a result of a query in the Jagiellonian Library, 19 of these pieces were successfully found on the basis of provenance notes, last wills and other records. The article discusses the process of their creation and the growth of the collection. It also explains why so few of these objects have been preserved up to the present time. The central part of the publication comprises a list of works from the codices, along with an attempt to determine how useful these were for the university community. Apart from the presentation of titles which the collection contained, considerable attention is drawn to the texts written in halls of residence. Colophons frequently feature information about the place and date of their creation, on the scribes’ names and academic degrees, or occasionally about a lecturer who submitted a particular work. The research results confirm existing opinions on libraries in university halls of residence. Although they may seem modest in comparison to those of colleges, halls’ book collections served the same purpose, acting as a teaching and study aid for professors and students, respectively. Their diversity and the uniqueness of the particular works they contained lead us to acknowledge their significance for Kraków University’s literary culture. It is especially crucial to preserve Cracovian scholars’ intellectual production and it was residents of the university’s halls of residence who copied their lectures and writings.
