Elements of Chinese Culture in Selected Xianxia and Xuanhuan Novels and Its Reception by Polish Fandom

Popularność chińskich powieści internetowych z gatunku fantasy danmei znacząco wzrosła w przeciągu ostatnich lat. Literatura ta swój początek wiążę z chińskimi forami internetowymi, a przez tłumaczenia fanowskie jej popularność zyskała praktycznie globalny zasięg i doprowadziła ostatecznie, do rozpoczęcia publikowania oficjalnych wydań anglojęzycznych powieści z tego gatunku. Najchętniej czytane powieści zaliczają się zazwyczaj do xianxia danmei i xuanhuan danmei. Xianxia i xuanhuan, które można zbiorczo nazwać chińskim fantasy, bazują wiele swoich elementów (składających się na budowę świata oraz elementów w nich zawartych), na chińskiej tradycji i kulturze. W ramach tej pracy zbadałam, jak elementy te prezentują się powieści oraz jak odbierane są przez czytelników. Najważniejszą rolę odegrały w niniejszej pracy elementy tradycyjnej kultury chińskiej obecne w powieściach. Na podstawie fragmentów z najpopularniejszych powieści z gatunku xianxia danmei oraz xuanhuan danmei, wyszczególniłam jak i jakie elementy kulturowe zawarte są w ich treści i tym samym prezentowane są czytelnikowi. Skupiłam się przy tym zarówno na samej treści jak i elementach graficznych (okładkach oraz ilustracjach dołączonych do oficjalnych anglojęzycznych wydań powieści). Przedstawiłam ogólny zakres tematyki kulturowej obecnej w powieściach oraz odwołania do konkretnych fragmentów – skupiając się kolejno na systemach filozoficzno-religijnych, modelu społecznym, zwyczajach ślubnych, zwyczajach związanych ze zmarłymi oraz wierzeniach i mitologii. W trakcie przeprowadzonych badań tekstu okazało się, że w większości wyszczególnionych przypadków, elementy kulturowe są przedstawione w ich oryginalnej formie, często zamieszczając przy tym dokładne opisy tego co zamieszczają. W przypadku warstwy graficznej powieści skupiłam się głównie na wykorzystaniu w nich przedstawień charakterystycznych elementów stroju oraz przedmiotów, które stanowiły suplementację opisów zawartych w powieściach.Istotną część pracy stanowi również kwestia polskiego fandomu, skoncentrowanego wokół powieści xianxia danmei oraz xuanhuan danmei. Grupy fandomowe, działające w sferze online, a także na konwentach, przyczyniają się do promowania chińskich powieści fantasy danmei i pośrednio, do promowania samej kultury chińskiej. Za pomocą wywiadów przeprowadzonych wśród członków polskiego fandomu, uzyskałam odpowiedź na to jak elementy kulturowe zawarte w powieściach odbierane są przez czytelników oraz czy powieści te wpływają na czytelników też w inny sposób. Uzyskane informacje mogą świadczyć o tym, że powieści w pewien sposób transmitują elementy kulturowe oraz stanowiły dla przebadanych osób dobry bodziec do dalszego poszukiwania czy innych tekstów kultury chińskiej czy pobudzać zainteresowanie samą kulturą chińską.

The popularity of Chinese fantasy danmei internet novels has increased significantly in recent years. This literature originated on Chinese internet forums, and through fan translations, its popularity has gained a virtually global reach and eventually led to the publication of official English-language editions of this genre. Among the most popular novels are those from genres xianxia danmei and xuanhuan danmei. Xianxia and xuanhuan, which can be collectively called Chinese fantasy, base many of their elements (that make up the construction of the world and the elements contained in them) on Chinese tradition and culture. As part of this work, I examined how these elements are presented in the novels and how they are received by readers.The most important role in this work was played by elements of traditional Chinese culture present in the novels. Based on fragments from the most popular novels of the xianxia danmei and xuanhuan danmei genres, I specified how and what cultural elements are included in their content and thus presented to the reader. I focused on both the content itself and the graphic elements (covers and illustrations included in the official English editions of the novels). I presented the general scope of cultural themes present in the novels and references to specific fragments - focusing successively on philosophical and religious systems, the social model, wedding customs, customs related to the dead, and beliefs and mythology. During the text research, it turned out that in most of the specified cases, cultural elements were presented in their original form, often including detailed descriptions of what one is dealing with. In the case of the graphic layer of the novel, I focused mainly on the use of characteristic elements of clothing and objects, which supplemented the descriptions contained in the novels. An important part of the work is also the issue of Polish fandom, focused on the novels xianxia danmei and xuanhuan danmei. Fandom groups, operating online, as well as at conventions, contribute to the promotion of Chinese fantasy novels danmei and, indirectly, to the promotion of Chinese culture itself. Through interviews conducted among members of the Polish fandom, I obtained an answer to how readers receive the cultural elements contained in the novels and whether these novels also affect readers in other ways. The information obtained may indicate that the novels transmit cultural elements in a certain way and were a good incentive for the interviewed people to continue searching for other texts of Chinese culture (and popculture) or to stimulate interest in Chinese culture itself.
