University institutions teaching Cultural Studies are often confronted with questions regarding the validity of their didactic methods as well as their relevance to the expectations of the contemporary labour market. It is stressed that the cultures of the world cannot be learned in academic classes and the advocates of this option emphasize the importance of the experience to be gained from interactions with people of different cultures. This often translates into a critique of the discipline per se as devoid of any real social influence. While generally acknowledging the gravity of these accusations, one has to keep in mind that traditionally taught classes still facilitate a significant level of immersion in a particular culture. Students can thus be trained to become professionals needed everywhere where the contact between representatives of various cultures is involved and where sensitivity towards cultural nuances is necessary. In this way, Cultural Studies can prove both relevant and economically useful. The purpose of this paper is therefore to reflect on the methodology of teaching Cultural Studies and to present some provisional solutions through the particular example of the Centre for Comparative Studies of Civilisations at the Jagiellonian University (Cracow, Poland).
