Literature as a spiritual exercise : Czesław Miłosz’s work in a post-secular perspective

Przyjęta w książce perspektywa postsekularna sprzyja identyfikacji tych momentów w dziele Czesława Miłosza, w których religia i literatura stają się sojuszniczkami nowoczesności w dążeniu do (auto)refleksji oraz odpowiedzialności jednostek za własny rozwój i kondycję wspólnot, z jakimi decydują się identyfikować. Autorka analizuje wypowiedzi Miłosza na temat związków między religią, nowoczesnością a literaturą, wchodzące w dialog z przemyśleniami współczesnych badaczy kultury, oraz interpretuje jego hybrydyczne gatunkowo praktyki twórcze jako innowacyjne „ćwiczenia duchowe”. Zatrzymuje się również nad relacją między wybranymi utworami powstałymi w odpowiedzi na konkretne warunki historyczne, społeczne i egzystencjalne, co pozwala nakreślić mapę najważniejszych strategii artystycznych Miłosza i problemów, z którymi mierzył się w wybranym przez siebie medium. Myśl postsekularna zostaje przy tym wsparta innymi tendencjami w studiach kulturowych: postkolonializm pomaga zrozumieć stawkę pisania Zniewolonego umysłu, psychoanaliza - meandryczne zmagania z religią w Ziemi Ulro, krytyka afektywna i studia nad traumą towarzyszą interpretacji Ocalenia, a studia nad pamięcią i zwrot performatywny inspirują refleksję nad relacją Miłoszowych tekstów do tradycyjnych rytuałów.

This book offers a historically and culturally grounded interpretation of the religious aspects of Czesław Miłosz’s work, at the same time highlighting the broader problem of relations between religion, literature and modernity, with consideration of the specific nature of the cultural formations from which the author of The Land of Ulro originated and which he co-created. The methodology of the presented studies is based, on the one hand, on the post-secular perspective problematizing the relation between modernisation processes and secularization, and, on the other hand, on the cultural theory of literature, interested in artistic texts and the context which they shape and by which they are shaped. The post-secular thought favours the identification of such moments in that work by Miłosz, in which religion and literature become allies of modernity in the pursuance of own ideals, while the cultural theory of literature, supported by Ryszard Nycz’s text theory, stresses the multidirectional agency of literary works, allowing for the interpretation of Miłosz’s hybrid (in terms of genres) artistic practices as innovative "spiritual exercises" linking his vision of literature with the project of his own spiritual development and the intention to serve the readers. Moreover, the selection of the analysed works has been influenced by the constellation analysis assumptions. In the course of the work, encounters between the post-secular perspective and other trends in cultural studies have often occurred. Post-colonialism has turned out to be helpful in the understanding of the religious meaning of The Captive Mind; psychoanalysis with the concept of suppression has been included in the analysis of the modern image of the status of religion in The Land of Ulro; the affective criticism and the studies of psychological trauma have partially accompanied the interpretation of Rescue, and the studies on memory have inspired the reflection on Miłosz’s relation to Catholic rites. The strive to capture the religious meanings of the poet’s artistic practice itself owes a lot to the performative turn. This book also follows the process of weakening the religious-lay dichotomy occurring in Miłosz’s works; particularly the inclusion of the traditionally religious concepts, practices and artistic forms in the scope of literary quests. This allows to point out the secondary naivety of the vocabulary and the forms of artistic expression created by Miłosz for the sake of his own works. Following the fall of "primevaly" naïve faith (belonging to the canonical-orthodox cultural equipment), an effort occurs in this creative work aimed at the faith based on a critical reflection and choice, and at the struggle of autolegitimization, of which literature perceived as a spiritual exercise can be an effective vehicle.
