The image of the Khazars in The Tale of Bygone Years

Poniższa praca, „Wizerunek Chazarów w świetle Powieści minionych lat”, zajmuje się tematyką półkoczowniczego ludu Chazarów oraz ich przedstawienia w Powieści minionych lat, najstarszym latopisie Rusi Kijowskiej. Celem niniejszej pracy było poddanie analizie znanych z latopisu zapisów dotyczących Chazarów oraz zestawienie ich z innymi dostępnymi źródłami traktującymi na ten temat. Założeniem autora było wykazanie kluczowego znaczenia Chazarów w formowaniu się państwowości ruskiej oraz kształtowaniu całokształtu stosunków geopolitycznych w rejonie. Praca została podzielona na dwie główne części: pierwsza z nich ma na celu przedstawienie znanych dzisiejszej nauce informacji dotyczących Chazarów i zaprezentowanie obecnego stanu badań. Druga część pracy skupia się na informacjach zawartych w Powieści minionych lat i ich analizie. Zestawienie to pozwala zrozumieć, ile istotnych wiadomości dotyczących Chazarów można wywnioskować na podstawie latopisu, który stanowi istotne źródło dla badań nad historią nie tylko Rusi, ale także jej sąsiadów. Sama ilość zapisów na temat Chazarów wskazuje na znaczącą rolę, którą odegrali oni w historii Rusi Kijowskiej i całego regionu.

The following thesis, ‘The image of the Khazars in The Tale of Bygone Years’, covers the subject of seminomadic Khazar people and their perception in The Tale of Bygone Years, the oldest chronicle of Kievan Rus’. The intent of this work was to carry out the analysis of the records of the Khazars contained in the chronicle and to compare them with the other known sources. The author’s aim was to demonstrate the key importance of the Khazars in the formation of Russian statehood and the formation of the general geopolitical relations in the region. The work has been divided into two main parts: the first section aims to present information on the Khazars known to today’s learning and to display the current state of studies. The second part of the work focuses on the information contained in The Tale of Bygone Years and their analysis. This arrangement allows to understand how much of a relevant information about the Khazars can be inferred from this chronicle, which is an important source for studies on the history of Rus’ and its neighbors. The sheer number of records about the Khazars indicates a significant role that they played in the history of Kievan Rus’ and the entire region.
