The historical dramatic series by BBC, HBO, Showtime - discussion and analysis of selected examples

W pracy Seriale historyczne BBC, HBO, Showtime – omówienie i analiza na wybranych przykładach, przybliżam problematykę związaną z obrazowaniem historii w czterech wybranych serialach o charakterze dramatów kostiumowych: Sześć żon Henryka VIII (1970), Ja, Klaudiusz (1976), Rzym (2005–2007) oraz Dynastia Tudorów (2007–2010). Wybierając temat pracy, kierowałam się przede wszystkim obecną modą na seriale historyczne oraz związanego z tym charakterystycznego sposobu, w jaki jest ukazywana historia, a także jak te same okresy historyczne są postrzegane i prezentowane przez Brytyjczyków i Amerykanów. Podstawowymi czynnikami, które sprawiły, że wybrałam akurat te cztery produkcje, jest pewna powtarzalność tematów, sposób ich obrazowania, przynależność do nurtu quality television, a także różnice wynikające z czasu ich powstania i postępu technologicznego.Pierwszy rozdział jest omówieniem tematu od strony teoretycznej: zawiera on krótkie wprowadzenie do problematyki gatunku telewizyjnego oraz opis tego, jak obrazowano historię w filmie, a jak w serialach. Kolejne dwa rozdziały są poświęcone podstawowej analizie fabularnej oraz analizie stylistycznej czterech wybranych seriali. Oba te rozdziały są uzupełnione kadrami ilustrującymi omawiane zagadnienia. Rozdział czwarty dotyczy nurtu quality television oraz opisu sposobu działania trzech stacji (BBC, HBO, Showtime), które wyprodukowały omawiane w pracy seriale. W podsumowaniu zawarłam kwestię zmian, jakie zaszły w procesie produkcji poszczególnych serii, nie tylko na poziomie wizualnym, ale również fabularnym. Ponadto skupiłam się na czynnikach związanych z komercjalizacją, ze zmianami w obrębie kształtowania narracji ze względu na programy jakościowe (nurt quality television) oraz zmianami w technologii nadawania i odbierania przekazu telewizyjnego.

In this paper: The historical dramatic series by BBC, HBO, Showtime - discussion and analysis of selected examples, I bring problems connected with the imaging of history in the four selected dramatic series of period: Six Wives of Henry VIII (1970), I, Claudius (1976), Rome (2005 - 2007) and The Tudors (2007-2010). While selecting a topic of my paper, I have outlined primarily to the current fashion of historical series and the related characteristic of the way history is presented, as well as the same historical periods are perceived and presented by the British and Americans. The main factors that caused that I have chosen these four productions is that there are a repetitions of themes, the imaging method, belonging to the mainstream of quality television, as well as differences arising from the time of their creation and technological progress.The first chapter is a discussion topic from the theoretical: it contains a brief introduction to the television genre and a description of how the story was depicted in the film, and as in the series. The next two chapters are devoted to basic analysis of narrative and stylistic analysis of four selected series. Both of these chapters are supplemented by illustrative discuss personnel issues. The fourth chapter concerns the trend of quality television, and the description of the activities of the three stations (BBC, HBO, Showtime), which produced the work discussed in the series. The summary included a question of changes that have occurred in the manufacturing process of each series, not only on the visual level, but also feature. In addition, I focused on factors related to commercialization, with changes within the narrative development programs because of the quality (quality mainstream television) and changes in technology, broadcasting and receiving broadcast.
