Translation challenges in translating Lewis Carroll's "Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland" into Japanese

Niniejsza praca ma na celu przeanalizowanie japońskich przekładów powieści Lewisa Carrolla Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland oraz jej kontynuacji Through the Looking-Glass w oparciu o najbardziej interesujące oraz wymagające fragmenty tekstów oryginalnych, w porównaniu z przekładami na język polski. Autorka poprzedzi główną część tematyczną pracy wprowadzeniem do teorii przekładu oraz analizą uniwersum, które stworzył Lewis Carroll pod kątem lingwistycznym a także wpływu, jaki powieści te wywarły na kulturę globalną – przede wszystkim w Japonii, gdzie Alicja do dziś cieszy się niesłabnącą popularnością. Przeanalizowane fragmenty przekładów będą pochodzić z dwóch wersji japońskojęzycznych autorstwa Kusuyamy Masao i Yamagaty Hiroo oraz dwóch wersji polskojęzycznych autorstwa Macieja Słomczyńskiego oraz Roberta Stillera. Porównywane fragmenty zostaną opatrzone komentarzami wskazującymi na podobieństwa i różnice w użytych przez tłumaczy metodach translacji.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse Japanese translations of Lewis Carroll's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, based on the most interesting and challenging passages of the original texts and also in comparison with the Polish translations of the novels. The author will precede the main thematic part of the work with a brief introduction to translation theory and an analysis of the universe created by Lewis Carroll from the linguistic point of view, as well as of the impact these novels have had on global culture – especially on Japan, where Alice continues to be exceptionally popular. The translation excerpts analysed in this thesis will come from two Japanese-language versions by Kusuyama Masao and Yamagata Hiroo and two Polish-language versions by Maciej Słomczyński and Robert Stiller. The compared excerpts will be annotated with comments in order to indicate similarities and differences in the translation methods chosen by the translators.
