Autorka przytacza i analizuje różne koncepcje dotyczące kondycji umysłowej człowieka, śledząc ich przemiany na przestrzeni epok i różnych cywilizacji. Przytacza teorie z pogranicza socjologii i psychologii, wskazując na zmieniający się status ludzi chorych. Opisuje historię powstania pierwszych w Europie szpitali psychiatrycznych, a następnie analizuje społeczne wyobrażenia na ich temat. Wyobrażenia te powstały na styku literatury, sztuki i nauki. Koncepcje z wielu różnych dziedzin zostają zaaplikowane do analizy serialu American Horror Story: Asylum. Twórcy, budując serialowy obraz szpitala psychiatrycznego, jego pacjentów oraz personelu, z jednej strony czerpali z popularnych przesądów, mitów i lęków upowszechnionych w społeczeństwie amerykańskim, z drugiej natomiast, przyczynili się do ich utrwalenia we współczesnej kulturze.

The thesis deals with the images of mental illness and psychiatric hospitals transmitted by Western culture. The author refers to and analyses different concepts related to human mental condition, following their changes through different epochs and civilisations. Various psychological and sociological theories are referred to, indicating the changing status of mentally ill people. The history of the creation of the first psychiatric institutions in Europe is described, and next, social images of them are analysed. Those images arose from the combination of literature, art, and science. Theories from different domains will be applied to the analysis of the series American Horror Story: Asylum. Its authors, creating the image of the psychiatric hospital, its patients and the staff, on the one hand, culled from popular superstitions, myths and fears spread in American society, and, on the other hand, contributed to their perpetuation in contemporary culture.
