YouTube in the service of science – analysis of selected cases

Nauka i popularyzacja wiedzy towarzyszą człowiekowi od zarania jego dziejów. Dziś, w czasach intensywnego rozwoju technologii informatycznych, treści popularnonaukowe coraz częściej pojawiają się także w internecie. Platforma YouTube jest chętnie wykorzystywana do tego celu. W pierwszym rozdziale pracy sama nauka została określona jako wiedza sprowadzona do obiektywnej formy, a treści popularnonaukowe jako jako przygotowane w przystępnej formie materiały bazujące na źródłach naukowych. Rola internetu w pracy naukowej jak i codziennych zastosowaniach staje się coraz większa. Drugi rozdział pracy przedstawia analizę rodzaju treści, tematyki, formy oraz metod dotarcia do widza używane przez wybranych twórców. Część badawcza pracy skupia się na popularności i przydatności materiałów popularnonaukowych publikowanych na platformie YouTube, jako źródła informacji oraz formy pomocy naukowej i dydaktycznej. Wyniki badań wskazują, że treści popularnonaukowe na YouTube są chętnie oglądane i traktowane przede wszystkim jako forma rozrywki oraz źródło ciekawostek, jednak dla uczniów są także chętnie używaną formą pomocy naukowej. Platforma YouTube jest także często wykorzystywana przez nauczycieli jako forma pomocy dydaktycznej. Duża część polskich użytkowników sięga również do zagranicznych kanałów popularnonaukowych.

Science and the popularization of knowledge accompany man from the dawn of his history. These days, in times of intensive development of information technologies, popular science content appears more and more often on the Internet. YouTube platform is eagerly used for this purpose. In the first chapter of the thesis, the science itself was defined as “knowledge reduced to an objective form”, and the popular science content as “materials based on scientific sources, prepared in an accessible form”. The role of the internet in scientific work and everyday use is becoming more and more crucial. The second chapter of the thesis presents the analysis of the type of content, subject matter, form and the methods of getting to the viewer used by the chosen content creators. The research part of the work focuses on the popularity and usefulness of popular science materials published on theYouTube platform, as the source of knowledge and a form of research and teaching assistance. The research results indicate, that popular science content on YouTube platform is eagerly watched and above all, treated as a form of entertainment and source of interesting facts. It is also eagerly used as a form of study help among students. YouTube platform is also frequently used by teachers as a form of teaching aid. A large number of Polish users also watches foreign popular science YouTube channels.
