"There is no poor weather in the mountains, there are poor characters": A community of experiences among mountain tourists on example of the Main Beskidy Trail

Niniejsza praca magisterska poświęcona jest antropologicznej analizie sposobów formowania i odtwarzania wspólnoty w grupie turystów podróżujących Głównym Szlakiem Beskidzkim. W rozdziale pierwszym autorka dokonuje analizy wędrówek Głównym Szlakiem Beskidzkim z perspektywy antropologicznych badań nad turystyką, zwraca również uwagę na podobieństwa opowieści turystów górskich oraz motywów pojawiających się w literaturze drogi. Drugi rozdział poświęcony jest analizie turystów Głównego Szlaku Beskidzkiego jako wspólnoty. Rozważania autorka wyprowadza od pojęcia „wspólnot wyobrażonych”, sformułowanego przez Benedicta Andersona, następnie wprowadzić również koncepcję „formacji estetycznych” (aesthetic formations), zaproponowaną przez Birgit Meyer. W rozdziale tym wykazane jest także podobieństwo turystyki oraz pielgrzymki. Autorka korzysta w tym miejscu z koncepcji communitas, wprowadzonej do badań nad pielgrzymkami przez Victora Turnera. W ostatnim rozdziale przedstawiona jest propozycja analizy Studenckich Baz Namiotowych PTTK jako współczesnego locus amoenus, miejsca rozkosznego.

This master's thesis is devoted to the anthropological analysis of ways of forming and recreating the community in the group of tourists traveling along the Main Beskid Trail. In the first chapter the author analyzes hiking along the Main Beskid Trail from the perspective of anthropology of tourism, and also draws attention to the similarities of the mountain tourists' stories and the themes appearing in the road literature. The second chapter is devoted to the analysis of the tourists of the Main Beskid Trail as a community. The author derives her considerations from the concept of "imagined communities" formulated by Benedict Anderson, and then introduces the concept of "aesthetic formations” proposed by Birgit Meyer. This chapter also shows the similarity of tourism and pilgrimage. The author uses here the concept of communitas, introduced to the study of pilgrimages by Victor Turner. The last chapter presents an analysis of the Student Campsites of Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society as a contemporary locus amoenus – a pleasant place.
