What Do You Have Within You, Love? A Translation of Selected Songs from the Telenovela "Amor con aroma de mujer"

Telenowela to nie tylko gatunek telewizyjny — to przestrzeń, w której emocje, społeczne napięcia i kulturowe tożsamości splatają się w narrację o miłości, stracie i nadziei. W niniejszej pracy podjęto próbę tłumaczenia trzech piosenek z kolumbijskiej telenoweli Café con aroma de mujer, traktując je jako teksty kultury, w których muzyka staje się głosem bohaterki. Utwory Amor que me hiciste, Mal amor oraz Como un cristal zostały poddane analizie pod kątem ich funkcji narracyjnej, emocjonalnej i muzycznej. Tłumaczenia opracowano z uwzględnieniem strategii takich jak transkreacja, kompensacja, modulacja czy adaptacja kulturowa, koncentrując się na zachowaniu wykonalności i autentyczności emocjonalnej. Praca ukazuje, że tłumaczenie piosenek w produkcjach audiowizualnych to nie tylko przekład językowy, ale także akt twórczy, w którym tłumacz staje się współautorem emocji i znaczeń. To próba uchwycenia tego, co w telenoweli dzieje się między słowami — w pauzach, w melodii, w spojrzeniu bohaterki.

A telenovela is more than a television genre — it is a space where emotions, social tensions, and cultural identities intertwine in a narrative of love, loss, and hope. This thesis explores the translation of three songs from the Colombian telenovela Café con aroma de mujer, treating them as cultural texts in which music becomes the voice of the protagonist. The songs Amor que me hiciste, Mal amor, and Como un cristal were analyzed in terms of their narrative, emotional, and musical functions. The translations were developed using strategies such as transcreation, compensation, modulation, and cultural adaptation, with a focus on preserving singability and emotional authenticity. The thesis demonstrates that translating songs in audiovisual productions is not merely a linguistic task, but a creative act in which the translator becomes a co-author of emotions and meaning. It is an attempt to capture what happens between the words — in the pauses, in the melody, in the gaze of the protagonist.
