Morality of a female rogue in Daniel Defoe’s novels exemplified by Roxana and Moll Flanders

Głównym celem pracy jest omówienie zagadnienia moralności łotrzycy w powieściach Daniela Defoe na przykładzie Roxany i Moll Flanders. Przedstawiono w niej opis obu bohaterek na tle sytuacji społecznej kobiet w Anglii XVIII wieku, podkreślono związek obu dzieł z tradycją łotrzykowską, wreszcie, zwrócono uwagę na problem dwugłosu narracyjnego i przybliżono poglądy autora na temat filozofii kupieckiej (homo economicus) i kwestii dysydentów. Istotny okazał się problem zastosowania przez Defoe ironii, ponieważ wpływa ona ostatecznie na odbiór pouczeń moralnych. Stwierdzono, że moralność Roxany i Moll Flanders jest skupiona na osobistym szczęściu, a także uzależniona od strachu przed biedą i potrzeby niezależności finansowej.

The main aim of this thesis is to discuss the issue of the morality of the female rogue in the novels of Daniel Defoe exemplified by Roxana and Moll Flanders. The thesis describes both heroines against the background of the social situation of women in 18th-century England, emphasizes the relationship between both novels and the picaresque tradition, and finally draws attention to the problem of a narrative double-voice, and presents the author’s views on mercantile philosophy (homo economicus) and the issue of dissidents. The problem of the use of irony by Defoe proved to be important, because this trope ultimately affects the reception of moral instructions. The morality of Roxana and Moll Flanders was found to be centered on their personal happiness and dependent on the fear of poverty and the need for financial independence.
