Różnorodność gatunkowa w adaptacjach filmowych Frankensteina Mary Shelley

Celami niniejszej pracy jest pokazanie, w jaki sposób dwuznaczność gatunkowa Frankensteina Mary Shelley stała się inspiracją dla wielu reżyserów oraz analiza adaptacji filmowych, które przedstawiają historię Wiktora Frankensteina i jego Potwora w różnych gatunkach. Analiza ta dotyczy trzech filmów: komedii Young Frankenstein, odcinka serialu detektywistycznego Z Archiwum X pod tytułem „Postmodernistyczny Prometeusz” oraz filmu animowanego Tima Butrona – Frankenweenie. Praca pokazuje, jak różniące się od siebie pod względem gatunkowym adaptacje, wciąż pozostają wierne tematom przedstawionym przez Mary Shelley. Pierwszy rozdział jest poświęcony opisowi Frankensteina jako książki napisanej w tradycji powieści gotyckiej oraz jednej z pierwszych przykładów literatury science-fiction. Następne rozdziały skupiają się na analizie trzech adaptacji. W rozdziale drugim, autorka opisuje różnice oraz podobieństwa względem powieści, jakie istnieją w komediowej adaptacji Young Frankenstein, w której wnuk samego Wiktora Frankensteina nie potrafi oprzeć się pokusie ożywienia człowieka. Trzeci rozdział jest poświęcony odcinkowi serialu Z archiwum X, w którym reżyser przedstawia nowele Mary Shelley jako zagadkę detektywistyczną. Ostatnia sekcja koncentruje się na Frankenweenie, filmie animowanym dla dzieci i opowiada historię Frankensteina z perspektywy dziecka.

The aims of this thesis are to show how the generic ambivalence of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein has inspired many film directors, and to analyze the film adaptations that depict the story of Victor Frankenstein and his Monster in different film genres. This analysis concerns three films: the comedy entitled Young Frankenstein, an episode of the detective series The X-Files entitled "The Post-Modern Prometheus" and the animated movie by Tim Burton - Frankenweenie. The thesis shows how adaptations, although various in their forms, still remain faithful to the themes presented by Mary Shelley. The first chapter is devoted to the description of Frankenstein as a book written in the Gothic tradition, and as one of the first examples of science-fiction literature. The following chapters focus on the analysis of the three adaptations. In the second chapter, the author describes the differences and similarities between the source text and the comedy adaptation entitled Young Frankenstein, in which Victor Frankenstein's grandson cannot resist the temptation to revive the man. The third chapter is devoted to the episode of the series The X-Files, in which the director presents Mary Shelley's book in the form of a detective riddle. The last section focuses on Frankenweenie, an animated movie for children, and tells Frankenstein's story from a child's perspective.
