On the discourse in the theory of pastoral poetry. Strategies of persuasion in the criticism of bucolic illustrated with examples of Alexander Pope's "A Discourse on Pastoral Poetry" and Kazimierz Brodziński's "O idylli pod względem moralnym"

Dziedzina badań nad literaturą bukoliczną ma od zarania postać dyskusji, której najważniejszym i zarazem najbardziej spornym punktem jest -dyskusyjna właśnie - tożsamość jej przedmiotu. Celem niniejszej pracy jest wykazanie, że właściwość ta ma decydujące znaczenie dla sposobu wchodzenia w ten obszar wiedzy. Rozprawa pokazuje dyskursywny charakter wypowiedzi krytycznych na temat poezji pastoralnej i koncentruje się na analizie strategii perswazyjnych w dwóch tekstach krytycznych, pochodzących z różnych tradycji literackich i prezentujących antagonistyczne koncepcje bukoliki ("A Discourse on Pastoral Poetry" Aleksandra Pope'a oraz "O idylli pod względem moralnym" Kazimierza Brodzińskiego). Odmienne właściwości temperamentu intelektualnego krytyków mają bezpośrednie przełożenie nie tylko na ich wizje poezji pastoralnej, ale także na sposób ich przedstawienia.

The criticism on the bucolic literature has alway been a sort of discussion, in which the most important and, at the same time, the most disputable question was - disputable itself - the identity of its subject. The aim of this dissertation is to demonstrate how thi influences the way of exploring this field of the knowledge of literature. The paper points out the discursive character of the criticism of pastoral poetry and focuses on two critical texts, from two different literary traditions, which present antagonistic theories of bucolic ("A Discourse on Pastoral Poetry" by Alexander Pope and "O idylli pod względem moralnym" by Kazimierz Brodziński). Not only is there a direct correlation between the disparate qualities of the intelectual temperament of the two critics and their coceptions of bucolic, but also between these mental attributes and the way the authors present their views on pastoral poetry.
