A Portuguese infant at European courts: D. Manuel de Bragança (1697-1766)

Niniejsza praca ma na celu przestudiowanie podróży europejskich infanta portugalskiego D. Manuela de Bragança ((1697-1766) w oparciu przede wszystkim o źródła portugalskie. W pierwszej części podejmuje się próbę zarysowania warunków, w jakich się wychowywał na dworze swojego brata króla Jana V, a następnie wytycza się trasę jego dziewiętnastoletnich podróży po dworach Europy ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem okoliczności, w jakich się one odbywały oraz sposobów traktowania D. Manuela przez goszczących go monarchów. Ucieczka infanta spod kurateli Jana V w 1715 roku zapoczątkowała proces stopniowego zanikania więzi między D. Manuelem oraz krajem ojczystym i rodziną, a rozwijająca się latami niezgoda między braćmi doprowadziła do specyficznej sytuacji, w której członek dynastii królewskiej jest zdany na łaskę obcych monarchów i uzależniony od politycznej koniunktury. W wyniku długoletniego zerwania kontaktów ze swoim krajem infant portugalski stał się narzędziem polityki austriackiej, przez pewien czas typowany był jako kandydat cesarski do tronu Rzeczypospolitej i z Austrią wiązał wszystkie swoje nadzieje zarówno elekcyjne, jak i matrymonialne. Załamanie się tych planów zmusiło go do powrotu do Portugalii, nie zmieniło jednak nastawienia infanta, który widział swoja przyszłość jedynie za granicą, co potwierdzają kolejne liczne próby wyjazdu oraz snute projekty.

The paper intends to study European travels of a Portuguese infant D. Manuel de Bragança (1697-1766) based primarily on the Portuguese sources. At first it attempts to outline the conditions in which he was brought up at the court of his brother king John V, and then sets the route of his journey through the courts of Europe with particular attention to the circumstances in which they are held and how was D. Manuel treated by monarchs who hosted him. The infant's escape from the tutelage of John V in 1715 initiated a process of gradual disappearance of ties between D. Manuel and home country and family, while growing discord between brothers has led to a specific situation in which a member of the royal dynasty is at the mercy of foreign monarchs and is dependent on their politics. As a result of prolonged rupture of contacts with his country and family the Portuguese infant became the policy tool of the Austrian court and for some time been considered an imperial candidate to the throne of the Republic of Poland. The collapse of these plans has forced him to return to Portugal, but did not change the attitude of infant, who saw his future only abroad, as evidenced by the another numerous attempts to leave the country.
