Metatheatre in the plays: Luigi Pirandello’s “Sei Personaggi in Cerca d'Autore” and “Dwa teatry” by Jerzy Szaniawski.

This work discusses the manner of functioning of the metatheatre in literary writings and the scope for its manifestation in them. It reveals the rules of dramatic construction and theatrical mechanisms which govern the text. The work is to present not only the technical side of the construction of a drama but, above all, the problems of theatre on its own – to issues of illusion and disillusion, artificiality and truth, life and form. It focuses mainly on the philosophical aspect of overt theatricality. Pirandello and Szaniawski’s dramas epitomise this matter, as metatheatrical devices are used in them in order to indicate the objection to the constant favoring of mimesis and, as a result, lead to the criticism of naturalistic aesthetics.

Praca podejmuje problem sposobu funkcjonowania i możliwości przejawiania się metateatru w utworach literackich. Obnaża zasady konstrukcji dramatycznej i mechanizmów teatralnych rządzących tekstem. Celem pracy jest nie tylko ukazanie technicznej strony budowy dramatu, ale przede wszystkim prezentacja problemów teatru samego w sobie – problemu iluzji i deziluzji, sztuczności i prawdy, życia i formy. Skupia się głównie na filozoficznym aspekcie jawnej teatralności. Najlepszymi przykładami stają się tutaj dramaty Pirandella i Szaniawskiego, w których zastosowanie chwytów metateatralnych ma służyć przede wszystkim ukazaniu sprzeciwu wobec ciągłego wówczas hołdowania zasady mimesis i w efekcie prowadzić do krytyki estetyki naturalistycznej.
