Tęsknota and Saudade. A comparison of key emotions of the Polish and the Portuguese culture.

Polska tęsknota i portugalska saudade są uważane za emocje kluczowe dla kultur, w których zostały zleksykalizowane. Autorzy opisujący te emocje twierdzili, że pojęcia nazywające je są nieprzetłumaczalne na inne języki z powodu ich silnego związku z kulturą i zjawiskami historyczno-społecznymi, kolejno: Polski i Portugalii. Niniejsza praca miała na celu porównanie obu tych emocji pod względem zakresu znaczeniowego pojęcia oraz roli, jaką pełnią one w kulturze danego kraju. W tym celu przeprowadzono wywiady z Polakami i Portugalczykami, a także uzyskano komentarze od dwujęzycznych ekspertów. Analiza jakościowa uzyskanych danych wskazuje na zbieżność pojęciową tęsknoty i saudade. Ponadto, saudade, w przeciwieństwie do tęsknoty w kulturze polskiej, jest emocją, której przypisuje się szczególną wartość w kulturze portugalskiej. Jest to pojęcie szczególnie dostępne mentalnie dla Portugalczyków. Wyniki są dyskutowane w kontekście różnic kulturowych i językowych pomiędzy Polską i Portugalią.

Polish tęsknota and Portuguese saudade are believed to be key emotions to the cultures in which the terms were lexicalized. Authors who described these emotions claimed that the concepts are untranslatable to other languages because of their strong relation with the culture and socio-historical phenomena specific to Poland and Portugal, respectively. This thesis aimed to compare these emotions in respect of the concepts correspondence and the role they play in the culture of given nations. For this purpose, interviews with Polish and Portuguese groups were conducted, and comments from the bilingual experts collected. The qualitative analyze of the obtained data indicates a strong overlap of the concepts of tęsknota and saudade. However, saudade, on the contrary to tęsknota in the Polish, is the emotion of a special value in the Portuguese culture. This concept is very salient for the Portuguese people. The results are discussed in the context of cultural and linguistic differences between Poland and Portugal.
