Japanese-Korean territorial dispute over Dokdo/Takeshima islands through the perspective of realist and neorealist school of international relations

Autor przedstawia relację między dwoma sojusznikami Stanów Zjednoczonych – Japonią i Koreą Południową. Analiza skupia się wokół jednej z kwestii spornych między tymi państwami, problematycznej przynależności terytorialnej wysp Dokdo/Takeshima. Przedstawiony zostaje skrótowy obraz relacji między obiema stronami konfliktu oraz jego podłoże prawne. Uwzględnia tym samym zarówno kwestie niejasnych zapisów i procesu tworzenia traktatu z San Francisco, jak i wydarzenia prowadzące do obecnego kształtu konfliktu.Następnie analiza wykorzystuje teorię neorealistyczną i realistyczną stosunków międzynarodowych, by odpowiedzieć na pytanie o możliwość eskalacji sporu terytorialnego. Wykorzystuje prowadzoną przez mocarstwa działające w regionie politykę, by nakreślić presję systemu międzynarodowego na poszczególne strony konfliktu. Finalnie dokonuje analizy potęgi poszczególnych państw i przybliża możliwości zaburzenia przez Japonię i Koreę Południową statusu quo.

The author describes the relations between two US’s allies – namely Japan and South Korea. The research itself focuses on the contentious issues between both states. By depicting the argument about the territorial sovereignty of the Dokdo/Takeshima islands study aims to answer the questions about the probability of escalation of the conflict.The analysis starts with the brief history of Japan-Korea relations and the legal issues concerning the aforementioned islets. Furthermore, it shows the lobbying process and changes between particular drafts of San Francisco Peace Treaty and their inclusion (or omission) of the Dokdo islands. Moreover, it shows the actions undertook after the end of the World War 2 which lead to the current status of the conflict.Only then does the research apply the strict theoretical approach to the Takeshima dispute. With the usage of the of neorealism, the study aims to decipher the influence of the international system on Japan and Korea. It takes examples of the policy of other world powers, which are active in the region, to infer the systemic pressure on both sides of the dispute.Furthermore, it takes into account the realist theory of international relations and depicts the powers of Japan and Korea as one of the core principles in estimating whether any attempts at disrupting the status quo are possible.
