Edukacja informacyjna na potrzeby funkcjonowania w mediach społecznościowych
Information literacy education for functioning in the social media environment
Edukacja informacyjna, kompetencje informacyjne, media społecznościowe, studenci, źródła informacji.
Information literacy education, information literacy skills, social media, university students, information sources.
Praktyczny rezultat pracy stanowi propozycja konspektu zajęć z zakresu edukacji informacyjnej, opartego przede wszystkim na wcześniej wspomnianych wynikach ankiety, uzupełnionego wnioskami z literatury. Obejmuje on związane z algorytmicznym doborem treści, oceną wiarygodności informacji, rolą komentarzy i reakcji społecznych, rozpoznawaniem dezinformacji oraz praktycznym weryfikowaniem źródeł zagadnienia.
The aim of this thesis is to discuss the importance of information literacy for social media users, with particular emphasis on students and young adults. Special attention is given to the ways in which users obtain information, the role of algorithms, and the challenges associated with evaluating the credibility of content published on said platforms. The study consists of a review of a questionnaire survey conducted among the target group, which consisted of university students and young adults who are regularly using social media. The questionnaire included questions regarding the use of social media as sources of information, the ways in which respondents encounter content, their awareness of how algorithms operate, the methods used to verify information, and the difficulties they experience while attempting to identify content that could be labeled as disinformation or misinformation. The results indicate that social media are an important source of information for the surveyed group. Respondents frequently encounter content through recommendations and profiles they follow, which demonstrates the significance of the role of platform mechanisms in shaping and regulating access to information. At the same time, the results reveal a variety of answers and approaches in respondents’ methods of verification and indicate a need to further develop the skills linked to recognision of misleading, unreliable, or otherwise problematic content. The practical outcome of the thesis is a proposed education plan to be implemented in the field of information literacy. It is based primarily on the results of the survey and supplemented by conclusions drawn from the literature review. The plan addresses issues related to algorithmic content selection, the assessment of information credibility, the influence of comments and social reactions, the identification of disinformation and misinformation, and the practical verification of sources. The main merit of the thesis lies in combining a theoretical analysis with conclusions that are based on declared information practices of students and young adults. The study demonstrates that information literacy education should take the specific characteristics of social media as an information environment in which exposure to content is often incidental, personalised, and dependent on the mechanisms employed by individual platforms into account. Thus, effective information literacy education should not focus only on the evaluation of individual sources but also help users understand the part that digital platforms play in shaping their access to information and influence they have on their perception of its relevance and credibility.
