Carlos Fuentes on the border between Mexico and the United States of America

Celem tej pracy jest ukazanie twórczości meksykańskiego pisarza Carlosa Fuentesa, związanej z tematyką wzajemnych relacji między Meksykiem i Stanami Zjednoczonymi, które zawsze należały do skomplikowanych, jako że kraje te dzieli jedna z najbardziej problematycznych granic na świecie. W pracy tej, poprzez ukazanie, między innymi, procesu historycznego, który doprowadził do uformowania dzisiejszego kształtu granicy, sytuacji imigrantów meksykańskich na terenie Stanów Zjednoczonych i różnic między kulturą anglosaską i hispanoamerykańską, prezentuje się relacje meksykańsko-amerykańskie z trzech punktów widzenia: historycznego, socjoekonomicznego i kulturowego. Następnie dokonuje się analizy trzech artykułów publicystycznych, trzech esejów i zbioru opowiadań zatytułowanego „Kryształowa granica”. Analiza ta pokazuje Carlosa Fuentesa jako pisarza zaangażowanego w problematykę kontynentu amerykańskiego, który staje w obronie interesów Ameryki Łacińskiej i w opozycji do imperialistycznej polityki Stanów Zjednoczonych.

The aim of this paper is to show the work of Carlos Fuentes related to the border issues between Mexico and the United States, countries that share one of the most complicated border areas of the world and whose relationship has always been difficult. First, we try to present the frontier from the historical, socioeconomic and cultural point of view, so that we can show the level of complication of the relation between those two countries. We analyze the historical process that led to the formation of the border nowadays, the situation of Latino immigrants in the U.S. territory and the differences between Anglo and Hispanic culture. Next, we present the work of the Mexican writer which includes three newspaper articles, three essays and a book of a short stories titled "The crystal frontier". Through them we present the author as a writer committed to the problems of the American continent and who used to speak in defense of the interests of Latinos, and who used to display his opposition to the imperialist policies of the United States.

El objetivo de este trabajo es mostrar la obra de Carlos Fuentes vinculada con los asuntos fronterizos entre México y los Estados Unidos, países que comparten una de las franjas fronterizas más problemáticas del mundo y cuyas relaciones siempre han sido difíciles. En el trabajo intentamos, primero, presentar la frontera desde tres puntos de vista: histórico, socioeconómico y cultural, para mostrar la profundidad y el grado de complicación de problemas que existen entre esos dos países y, segundo, presentar la obra fronteriza del escritor mexicano. Así pues se analiza el proceso histórico que llevó a la formación de la frontera actual, la situación de los inmigrantes latinos en el territorio norteamericano y las diferencias entra la cultura anglosajona e hispanoamericana. De la obra de Carlos Fuentes se examinan tres artículos periodísticos, 3 ensayos y una colección de cuentos titilada La frontera de crital. A través de ellos presentamos al autor como un escritor comprometido con lo real y con los problemas del continente americano, es decir, como un “Hombre de América” que solía tomar la palabra en la defensa de los intereses de los latinos. Son, asimismo, obras que manifiestan la oposición de Fuentes a las políticas imperialistas de los Estados Unidos.
