Obraz Amerykańskiego Południa w „Zabić Drozda” Harper Lee

Celem pracy jest przestudiowanie, w jaki sposób Harper Lee zobrazowała amerykańskie Południe lat 30., opisując wydarzenia przedstawione w jej klasycznej powieści „Zabić drozda”. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów. Pierwszy z nich opisuje życie Harper Lee oraz prezentuje sytuację historyczną w Stanach Zjednoczonych w latach 1930-1950. Drugi rozdział opisuje wydarzenia związane z niesławnym procesem Toma Robinsona, a także problemy dotyczące uprzedzeń na tle rasowym w Maycomb. Trzeci rozdział przedstawia podział na klasy i analizę społeczeństwa Maycomb oraz oczekiwania społeczne, a także to, w jaki sposób są one realizowane oraz jak wpływają one na zachowanie całej lokalnej społeczności. Praca skupia się na charakterystyce miasteczka Maycomb, które stanowi swoistą miniaturę Południa Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki w latach 1930-1950.

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how the American South was represented in Harper Lee’s classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. It takes a closer look at Harper Lee’s vision of the South presenting the case of Tom Robinson and introducing the theme of racial injustice and prejudice. Besides the main themes, it analyses the structure of the society and the social expectations that ruled the townspeople’s behaviour. It proves that the city of Maycomb presented in the novel functions as a miniature of the whole American South between the 1930s and the 1950s as everything that happened in Maycomb happened in the Bible Belt, too. The thesis scrutinises Harper Lee’s outlook on the racial issues and society of that time.
