Railway transportation in cities on the example of Szybka Kolej Miejska in Tricity

Współczesne aglomeracje miejskie charakteryzują się dużą gęstością zaludnienia, co wymaga zintegrowanego i efektywnego systemu transportu miejskiego. Transport kolejowy zyskuje na popularności ze względu na swoją ekologiczność, szczególnie istotną w kontekście zmian klimatycznych. Celem badania jest zrozumienie roli Szybkiej Kolei Miejskiej (SKM) w Trójmieście w zaspokajaniu potrzeb transportowych mieszkańców aglomeracji trójmiejskiej oraz zidentyfikowanie głównych problemów związanych z jej funkcjonowaniem. W badaniu poruszono rolę transportu miejskiego, historię i uwarunkowania powstania SKM, oraz najważniejsze problemy związane z jej funkcjonowaniem. Do realizacji celu pracy wykorzystano artykuły i publikacje naukowe, raporty i sprawozdania dotyczące kolejnictwa w Polsce oraz raporty publikowane przez Urząd Transportu Kolejowego. Analiza wykazała, że SKM odgrywa kluczową rolę w zaspokajaniu potrzeb transportowych mieszkańców Trójmiasta, jednak napotyka na liczne problemy związane z infrastrukturą i organizacją. Wyniki badania sugerują konieczność dalszych inwestycji i usprawnień w funkcjonowaniu SKM, aby lepiej służyć mieszkańcom i wspierać zrównoważony rozwój transportu miejskiego. Praca wnosi istotny wkład w dziedzinę transportu miejskiego, oferując nowe spostrzeżenia dotyczące roli i wyzwań związanych z funkcjonowaniem SKM w aglomeracjach miejskich.

Contemporary urban agglomerations are characterized by high population density, requiring an integrated and efficient urban transportation system. Rail transport is gaining popularity due to its ecological benefits, particularly important in the context of climate change. The objective of this study is to understand the role of the Szybka Kolej Miejska (SKM) in the Tricity area in meeting the transportation needs of residents and identifying the main problems associated with its operation. The study brings up the role of urban transport, presents the history and conditions of the SKM's establishment and identifies the main issues related to its operation. To achieve the study's objectives, articles and scientific publications, reports and statements on Polish railways and reports published by the Office of Rail Transport were utilized. The analysis revealed that the SKM plays a crucial role in meeting the transportation needs of Tricity residents but faces numerous infrastructure and organizational challenges. The results suggest the need for further investments and improvements in the SKM's operation to better serve residents and support the sustainable development of urban transport. This study significantly contributes to the field of urban transport, offering new insights into the role and challenges of SKM operations in urban agglomerations.
