Rakshasas in Epic Mythology

Głównym tematem pracy są Rakszasy, stworzenia mityczne opisywane w indyjskiej literaturze epickiej. W części pierwszej podano objaśnienia etymologiczne związane z ich nazwą wskazując na możliwość dwojakiej interpretacji oraz przedstawiono teorie związane z ich prawdopodobnym pochodzeniem. W części kolejnej przedstawiono cechy ich wyglądu i charakteru oraz pod tym kątem zanalizowano ich imiona własne. Podjęto też próbę porównania tych demonów ze znanymi z mitologii polskiej różnymi typami „złych duchów”. W części ostatniej zanalizowano wybrane fragmenty pochodzące z eposu Ramajana, a przedstawiające konkretne postaci Rakszasów.

The main topic of this work are Rakshasas, mythical creatures described in Indian epic literature. In the first part, etymological explanations related to their name are given, indicating the possibility of two interpretations, and the theories related to their probable origin are presented. In the next part, the features of their appearance and character are presented, and their proper names are analysed in this regard. An attempt was also made to compare these demons with various types of "evil spirits" known from Polish mythology. In the last part, selected fragments from the Ramayana epic and presenting specific figures of the Rakshasas were analysed.
