Semantic correlation and disambiguation of "Perun" in West and East Slavic languages and phraseology

The aim of this paper is to investigate the stages of development of lexical item "Perun" (the late Proto-Slavic Thunder god) in Western and Eastern Slavic languages, dialects and phraseological units. This will be done considering how during a specific time, the theonym and the thunderstorm phenomenon associated with him have been inseparable and thus semantically correlated. Subsequently changes in the theonym, and in the use of the theonym, provoked changes in the common noun, resulting in semantic disambiguation. Often these changes brought a contrastive stance towards the theonym ("Perun" as a swear word or as an evil entity) but they also retained some positive meanings typical of previous cultural phases ("Perun" as a hero or a strong person). Western and Eastern Slavic languages and dialects show different pattern of semantic disambiguation and correlation, as the total disambiguation of Russian and Czech or the total correlation in Belarusian and Polish. The dialects and the phraseological material sums in general the contrastive attitude and the positive meaning of Perun, maintaining in some cases a certain degree of ambiguity.
