The Master’s thesis analyzes the processes of adaptation of Belarusian immigrants in Poland and reveals the interconnection between usage of the Belarusian language and national identity in the context of a multilingual environment. Different reasons for migration as well as the current statistics of Belarusians living in Poland have been provided. The paper focuses on the Belarusians who moved to Poland after the massive protests in 2020 and whose moving abroad has been mostly politically motivated. The analysis described the relationship between national identity and language and demonstrated in what ways Belarusian migrants balance between cultural preservation and integration. Research suggests immigration can strengthen or dilute national identity, depending on factors like community requirements from migrants and engagement in the new environment. The research includes the results of empirical research as well as the theoretical summary of the sociolinguistic approaches to language and national identity. The master’s thesis highlights the importance of language and culture preservation for Belarusian immigrants in Poland and provides several adaptation strategy suggestions in the context of Belarusians integrating into Polish society.
