SUMMARY The present thesis discusses Henry James’s The Washington Square , The Portrait of a Lady and The Wings of the Dove as well as Edith Wharton’s The House of Mirth , Ethan Frome and The Age of Innocence, concentrating on the presentation of moral choices of their protagonists. Catherine Sloper , the main protagonist of Henry James’s The Washington Square (1880) is torn between her love for Maurice Townsend and the loyalty to her father, who does not accept her suitor. When she discovers his interest only in her inheritance, she hides her disappointment from her father and even many years later she refuses to reconcile with her former fiancé . In James’s The Portrait of a Lady (1881), Isabel Archer, trapped into an unhappy marriage to Gilbert Osmond, chooses between loyalty to her unloving husband and loyalty to his daughter Pansy, whom she wants to shelter . Having a chance to leave for her native America , she decides to stay with her husband. Kate Croy and Merton Densher, the main protagonists of James’s 1902 novel The Wings of the Dove , cheat a terminally ill but wealthy, Milly Theale . Densher pretends to love Milly, hoping to inherit her fortune and then marry Kate. Yet , after Milly’s death, he refuses to use her money. In Edith Wharton’s novel The House of Mirth (1905), LilyBart refuses marriage proposals from men she does not love as she is interested in Lawrence Selden, who does not propose . Lily’s hesitations produce her social downfall and poverty. It is not clear if her death at the end of the novel is an accident or suicide . In Wharton’s short novel, Ethan Frome (1911) , Ethan neglects his duties towards his wife Zeena and falls in love with Zeena’s cousin, Mattie Silver. They plan to commit double suicide but are punished for that only with physical injuries. In Wharton’s The Age of Innocence (1920) Newland Archer is torn between loyalty to his wife May and passion for an eccentric countess Ellen Olenski.
