Pochłonięci przez ekran. Reprezentacja queerowości w filmie "W blasku ekranu" Jane Schoenbrun
Consumed by the screen. Representation of queerness in "I saw the TV glow" by Jane Schoenbrun.
Queerowość, Jane Schoenbrun, doświadczenie, transpłciowość, fantastyka, tożsamość płciowa, identyfikacja, Teoria Jajka, "W blasku ekranu", różowa zjawa.
Queerness, Jane Schoenbrun, experience, transgender, the fantastic, gender, identification, Egg Theory, "I saw the TV Glow", the pink opaque.
The thesis consists of three analytical sections, which successively examine various aspects of queer representation in the film “I Saw the TV Glow”. First, the director’s biographical context is described, followed by a definition of the term ‘queer’ and an examination of the characters’ queerness. The next section is devoted to genre value, analysing Carroll’s theory of the fantastic genre. Schoenbrun explores the viewer-screen relation, immersing the audience in hesitation between natural and supernatural hypotheses that serve as a metaphor for the queer experience. The film also employs the other two characteristics of the fantastic: presenting the fictional world as the real one, and making a fantastic reading depend on the rejection of allegorical and poetic interpretations. It was also significant to discuss Carroll and Cohen’s identification theory, which supported reflections on the potential of the fantasy genre and emphasised the importance of demographic characteristics in enabling this process. The study was expanded to include a socio-cultural context, analysing “I saw the TV Glow” as a work that fits into Grace Laverly’s “Egg Theory”, and drawing on Juras and Skorupa’s research into the reception of queer representation by members of that community. The film, employing the structure of the materialised metaphor of an eggshell, portrays queerness, and even more so transition, as incomprehensible. The figure of the antagonist – Mr Melancholy – and his prison, the Midnight Realm, are symbols of a heteronormative society in which the very realisation of one’s queerness leads to slow suffocation. Drawing on research by Skorupa and Juras, the film highlights key representative aspects – the queer film crew, the casting choices – and moves away from the ‘path of martyrdom’, showcasing various paths of queerness. “I saw the TV Glow” constitutes an adequate queer representation, highlighting the important relationship between the individual and the screen they have chosen, as it becomes a medium that consumes the viewer and pushes them to confront their own identity.
