Asno and burro : a history of synonymy

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zbadanie obecności i statusu dwóch jednostek leksykalnych w języku hiszpańskim: asno „osioł” i burro „osioł”. Jeśli przyjmiemy, jak czynią to niektóre źródła, że ​​są one synonimami, pojawia się kilka pytań: jaki rodzaj synonimii reprezentują? I w jaki sposób system językowy utrzymuje dwa wymienne terminy? Aby odpowiedzieć na te pytania, badamy etymologię obu leksemów, prześledzimy ich obecność w języku hiszpańskim na przestrzeni dziejów, analizujemy ich dokumentację i zapis w słownikach, oceniamy częstotliwość ich użycia oraz identyfikujemy typy tekstów, w których występują. Analiza opiera się na różnych korpusach języka hiszpańskiego, a omawiając ich synonimię, posługujemy się kilkoma badaniami leksykologicznymi, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem perspektywy M.L. Regueiro Rodríguez.

The objective of this article is to investigate the presence and status of two lexical items in the Spanish language: asno ‘donkey’ and burro ‘donkey’. If we accept, as some sources do, that they are synonyms, several questions arise: what kind of synonymy do they represent? And how does a linguistic system maintain two interchangeable terms? To answer these questions, we examine the etymology of both lexemes, trace their presence in Spanish over time, analyse their documentation and treatment in dictionaries, assess their frequency of use, and identify the types of texts in which they appear. The analysis is based on various Spanish corpora, and in discussing their synonymy, we draw on several lexicological studies, with particular attention to the perspective of M.L. Regueiro Rodríguez.

El objetivo de este artículo es investigar la presencia y el estatus de dos elementos léxicos en español: asno y burro. Si aceptamos, como hacen algunas fuentes, que son sinónimos, surgen varias preguntas: ¿qué tipo de sinónimos representan? ¿Y cómo un sistema lingüístico mantiene dos términos intercambiables? Para responder a estas preguntas, examinamos la etimología de ambos lexemas, rastreamos su presencia en español a lo largo del tiempo, analizamos su documentación y tratamiento en diccionarios, evaluamos su frecuencia de uso e identificamos los tipos de textos en los que aparecen. El análisis se basa en varios corpus del español y, al analizar sus sinónimos, nos basamos en varios estudios lexicológicos, con especial atención a la perspectiva de M.L. Regueiro Rodríguez.
