The purpose of this present M.A. thesis was to introduce the reader to the novel of Janosch (Horst Eckert) Cholonek, czyli dobry pan Bóg z gliny whilst analyzing the grotesque – one of the most important literary categories used by Janosch in his work. The novel written by Horst Eckert presents the life of the miner`s family living in the area between Poland and Germany. Due to Janosch was born and brought up in Silesia, he often refers to his memories and experiences from his own childhood during the writing process. The background of the novel create some important historical events such as: Hitler`s ascent to power, the Second World War, the march of the Red Army on Poland or the Silesia`s inhabitants` exile to the western countries. The further aim of this study as mentioned was to make a research about the grotesque, which was so important not only in the literature itself, but also in the fine art. Janosch used it to create this amazing piece of work, Cholonek, czyli dobry pan Bóg z gliny. During the analysis of the novel and the techniques used, it was vital to focus on theories of following scientists, Michail Bachtin and Wolfgang Kayser. In this present M.A. thesis was shown, how the author used the grotesque in his work. The novel was conducted on the theory of Michail Bachtin, where the topics like: sexuality, human body, hygiene, birth or death are of great significance. Furthermore, Cholonek, czyli dobry pan Bóg z gliny was analyzed taking the theory of Wolfgang Kayser into consideration. This scientist presented the world as ,,demonic” and ,,evil” and the events like Hitler`s ascent to power, the activity of Nazi Party or the tragic of the everyday human`s live can constitute a proof of it.pl
