Historia integracji Afryki Wschodniej sięga czasów kolonialnych. Proces ten był kontynuowany przez kraje regionu nawet po uzyskaniu przez nie niepodległości. Współczesny blok regionalny jest formą reaktywacji i rozszerzenia wcześniejszej organizacji założonej w 1967 roku przez Kenię, Tanzanię i Ugandę. Pomimo załamania się procesów integracyjnych w 1978 roku, organizacja odrodziła się z niezmienionym składem i pod tą samą nazwą w 1999 roku. Obecnie Wspólnota Wschodnioafrykańska (EAC) - regionalna organizacja międzyrządowa jest uważana za najbardziej zaawansowaną w osiąganiu celów integracyjnych w całej Afryce. W jej skład wchodzi 7 państw (Burundi, Demokratyczna Republika Konga, Kenia, Rwanda, Sudan Południowy, Tanzania i Uganda), a jej granice przekraczają geograficznie zdefiniowany region Afryki Wschodniej. Celem rozdziału jest analiza ewolucji procesów integracyjnych państw członkowskich oraz próba odpowiedzi na pytania dotyczące uwarunkowań kolejnych procesów akcesyjnych.

History of East African integration dates back to colonial times. This process continued for the countries of the region even after their independence. The contemporary regional bloc is a form of reactivation and expansion of an earlier organisation founded in 1967 by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Despite the collapse of the integration processes in 1978, the organisation was reborn with unchanged membership and under the same name in 1999. Contemporary, the East African Community (EAC) – a regional intergovernmental organisation is considered to be the most advanced in achieving integration goals across Africa. It has 7 countries in its membership (Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda) and its boundaries have crossed the geographically defined region of East Africa. The aim of the chapter is to analyse the evolution of the integration processes of the Member States and to try to answer questions concerning the determinants of subsequent accession processes.
