Analiza metafor w wybranych wierszach Sylvii Plath w oparciu o Lingwistykę Kognitywną

Najważniejszym celem niniejszej pracy jest zaprezentowanie analizy wybranych wierszy autorstwa Sylvii Plath z punktu widzenia Lingwistyki Kognitywnej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem metafor w nich zawartych. Zanim cel ten zostaje osiągnięty w rozdziale trzecim, dwa pierwsze stanowią niezbędne dlań podłoże teoretyczne. Rozdział pierwszy zawiera przekrojową prezentację Lingwistyki Kognitywnej. Znaleźć w nim można informacje dotyczące historii, celów jak i głównych zobowiązań lingwistów pracujących w tym nurcie, jak również zarys ich podejścia do języka oraz jego powiązań z myślą i ciałem człowieka. Ponadto, rozdział ten obrazuje także ogólne podejście do semantyki i gramatyki funkcjonujące w ramach tej gałęzi lingwistyki, a jego ostatnia część traktuje o głównych przyczynach jej krytyki.Rozdział drugi naświetla sposób w jaki rozumie się w Lingwistyce Kognitywnej metaforę. Przedstawia on krótką notkę historyczną dotyczącą tegoż elementu języka, by później przenieść rozważania do zagadnień takich jak objaśnienie głównych założeń, na których opierają się badania w tej dziedzinie, umożliwiając jednoczesne zapoznanie czytelnika z fachową terminologią oraz licznymi przykładami metafor funkcjonujących w języku codziennym. Kolejno, także metafory obecne w poezji są częścią analizy. Ponadto omówionych zostaje również kilka technik używanych przy ich tworzeniu. Rozdział ostatni najpierw tłumaczy dlaczego skupiono się na tym konkretnym podejściu do analizy językowej, jak i wierszach, a następnie koncentruje się na omówieniu następujących dzieł: „Daddy”, „Mirror” oraz „Morning Song”. Rozważanie kończy się uwagą, iż Lingwistyka Kognitywna w sposób przekonujący wyjaśnia również metafory stosowane w poezji, a także podkreśla ich głębię.

The ultimate aim of this thesis is the presentation of a cognitive linguistic analysis of metaphors found in the selected poems by Sylvia Plath. Before the goal is reached in the third chapter, the two preceding ones provide the necessary theoretical background. The first chapter features a cross-sectional presentation of Cognitive Linguistics. It comprises information concerning the history, aims and commitments of cognitive linguists as well as an outline of their treatment of language and its interconnection with thought and the human body. It also depicts the general understanding of semantics and grammar within the confines of this branch of linguistics. The last section of the chapter discusses its main criticism. The second chapter elucidates the understanding of metaphor in the light of Cognitive Linguistics. It presents a brief historical note concerning this element of language and moves on to the explanation of the key tenets governing cognitive linguistic research in this area familiarising the reader with the terminology as well as with numerous examples of metaphors in everyday language. Later, a transition is made to the analysis of poetic metaphors and some techniques used to create them are discussed. The last chapter first explains why both, this approach and poems (i.e. “Daddy,” “Mirror,” and “Morning Song”) were chosen for the analysis to then present the reader with it. It ends with a note which indicates that the accessibility of metaphors discussed was facilitated by the cognitive linguistic approach applied to them as well as highlights the power and meaningfulness of poetic metaphors in general.
