The me and the other in "Pen Sketches" of Andrzej Bobkowski and "Wind, Sand and Stars" of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

"Szkice piórkiem" Andrzeja Bobkowskiego i "Ziemię, planetę ludzi" Antoine’a de Saint- Exupéry łączy bardzo wiele – utwory te powstały w zbliżonym czasie i w tym samym europejskim kręgu kulturowym, a narracja prowadzona jest pierwszoosobowo i dotyczy doświadczeń zaczerpniętych bezpośrednio z życia autorów. Najważniejsze podobieństwa dotyczą reprezentowanego przez bohaterów światopoglądu: apoteoza życia czynnego, przyjmowanie postawy mocy wobec świata, pełne przekonanie o słuszności podejmowanych działań i propagowanych wartości to podstawowe elementy, które łączą pilota i kolarza, wyrażające się w ich stosunku do sił przyrody, narzędzi pracy i innych ludzi. Wysoka samoocena i samoświadomość, uzyskana dzięki celowemu konfrontowaniu się ze światem zewnętrznym, połączona z gorzką diagnozą współczesnych bohaterom stosunków społecznych, znajduje wyraz w uniwersalistycznym i moralizatorskim charakterze formułowanych przez nich sądów. Zdecydowanie odmienny jest jednak ich stosunek do roli, jaką powinni odgrywać w społeczeństwie – bohater Saint-Exupéry’ego, świadom swojej wyższości, przyjmuje odpowiedzialność za ogólnoświatową wspólnotę ludzką, której czuje się wartościowym członkiem; B. doszukuje się jedynie przyczyn i symptomów rozkładu społeczeństwa, nie szuka rozwiązań i odżegnuje się od wszelkiej odpowiedzialności.W opracowaniach dotyczących twórczości Bobkowskiego i Saint-Exupéry’ego do tej pory nie zwrócono uwagi na podobieństwa dotyczące reprezentowanego przez bohaterów światopoglądu, stąd jest to pierwsza praca porównawcza podejmująca tę tematykę.

There are many similarities between “Pen Sketches” of Andrzej Bobkowski and “Wind, Sand and Stars” of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry – both were written in the same period of time and the same European culture; narration is lead in first person and refers to the experiences taken directly from the life of the authors. The most important similarities relate to the philosophy of life, represented by main characters: the apotheosis of active life, the attitude of power towards the world, the conviction of the rightness of the actions taken and promoted values – those are the basic elements, that pilot and cyclist have in common, expressed in relation to the forces of nature, tools and the other people. High self-esteem and self-awareness of main characters, achieved through an intentional confrontation with the outside world and combined with a bitter diagnosis of social relations of those days, find its reflection in universalist and moralistic judgments. Nevertheless their attitude to the role they should play in the society is definitely different – the narrator of “Wind, Sand and Stars”, aware of his superiority, finds himself a valuable member of global human community and assumes responsibility for it, whereas B. considers causes and symptoms of social breakdown without looking for any solutions or taking responsibility.So far the similarities between those two worldviews weren’t considered in the studies about their writings, thus this is the first comparative work undertaking this subject.
