Współczesne zjawisko militaryzacji buddyzmu. Dynamika rozwoju nacjonalizujących ugrupowań buddyjskich w relacji z władzą świecką w Mjanmie

Buddhism for the average western viewer carries a number of averaged meanings. We find among them values such as peace, compassion, love. Cultivation of mind, meditative reflection and self-improvement. For a more informed audience, this bag of meanings will include the truth of the absence of self (anātman) implying a distance from worldly affairs to a perception of existence as one's own, individual and original. The desire to break the pain of earthly existence resulting from the wheeling of incarnations (saṃsāra) and the final attainment of nirvana (s. nirvāṇa, p. nibbāna). But do these first, intuitive meanings with which Buddhism is tagged far from its homeland accord with Asian realities? Recently, information about the other, less noble face of Buddhism has been coming to a wider audience (also in the West). As an example, let's take the famous Time cover from 2013 showing the likeness of Ashin Wirathu. The photo was captioned "The Face of Buddhist Terror. The radicalization of the Buddha's teachings, especially in theravāda (theravāda) countries, is linked, among other things, to the escalation of ethno-identity conflicts in the last few decades. However, the question should be asked whether we are dealing here only with the politicization of Buddhism enforced by secular authorities, or whether a specific interpretation of Buddhist myths could be the basis of these conflicts. Or maybe in Buddha Gautama's teachings themselves we can find incitement to violence? This paper aims to study selected examples of Buddhist militarism in Myanmar. The result of these considerations is to show that in countries where Buddhism is part of the state ideology, there is a tendency for Buddhists to commit and sanction violence.pl
Buddyzm dla przeciętnego zachodniego odbiorcy niesie szereg uśrednionych znaczeń. Odnajdziemy wśród nich wartości takie pokój, współczucie, miłość. Kultywację umysłu, medytacyjny namysł i samodoskonalenie. Dla bardziej zorientowanego audytorium, do tego worka znaczeń dojdzie prawda o braku „ja” (anātman) implikująca dystans do spraw doczesnych do postrzegania egzystencji jako własnej, jednostkowej i oryginalnej. Chęć przerwania bólu ziemskiej egzystencji wynikającego z kołowrotu wcieleń (saṃsāra) i finalne osiągnięcie nirwany (s. nirvāṇa, p. nibbāna). Za przykład niech posłuży słynna okładka Time’a z 2013 roku przedstawiająca podobiznę Ashina Wirathu. Zdjęcie opatrzono podpisem „The Face of Buddhist Terror”.
