The Ashkenazi Jewish tradition presented to Polish and Spanish-speaking readers : analysis of a compilation of Jewish legends from Cracow and its translation into Spanish

In this paper we aim to analyze a small compilation of Jewish legends set in the city of Cracow from the point of view of the presence of cultural elements typical of the Jewish and Jewish-Polish tradition. We will compare the way of treating these elements in the versions of the legends collected by Artur Kiela in the book "Legendy żydowskiego Krakowa" and in its translation into Spanish made by Abel Murcia (entitled "Leyendas judías de Cracovia"). We are interested in observing, on the one hand, how Jewish culture is presented to a Polish reader, taking into account that nowadays it is practically unknown in Poland, and, on the other hand, examining what strategies and techniques the translator uses to transfer the Jewish cultural component and additionally the Jewish-Polish, in view of the fact that the legends are deeply rooted in the history of the Jewish communities in Poland.

En el presente artículo nos proponemos analizar una pequeña recopilación de leyendas judías ambientadas en la ciudad de Cracovia desde el punto de vista de la presencia de elementos culturales propios de la tradición judía y judío-polaca. Compararemos la manera de tratar dichos elementos en las versiones de las leyendas recogidas por Artur Kiela en el libro "Legendy żydowskiego Krakowa" y en su traducción al español hecha por Abel Murcia (titulada "Leyendas judías de Cracovia"). Nos interesa ver, por un lado, cómo se presenta la cultura judía al lector polaco, teniendo en cuenta que en la actualidad es algo que le es prácticamente desconocido, y, por otra parte, examinar qué estrategias y técnicas utiliza el traductor para trasvasar tanto el componente cultural judío como el judío-polaco, en vista de que las leyendas se ven muy arraigadas en la historia de las comunidades judías de Polonia.
