The phenomenon of Andrzej Kurylewicz's music in the TV series "Polish roads" (dir. Janusz Morgenstern)

Niniejsza praca została poświęcona muzyce Andrzeja Kurylewicza do serialu "Polskie drogi" w reżyserii Janusza Morgensterna. Rozdział I przedstawia biogramy twórców serialu – kompozytora Andrzeja Kurylewicza i reżysera Janusza Morgensterna oraz aktorów pierwszoplanowych. Dokonano również omówienia okoliczności powstania serialu wraz ze streszczeniem fabuły odcinków. Rozdział II poświęcono analizie warstwy muzycznej serialu, uwzględniając charakterystykę motywów głównych oraz opis wszystkich fragmentów muzycznych występujących w serialu. Wybrane fragmenty muzyczne zostały zanalizowane w korelacji z obrazem. W rozdziale tym zawarto także informacje na temat instrumentarium i zastosowanych technik kompozytorskich. Rozdział III obejmuje charakterystykę stylistyki ścieżki muzycznej i warsztatu kompozytorskiego Andrzeja Kurylewicza. Ponadto zwrócono uwagę na wyjątkową popularność czołówki serialu, dowodząc jej stałej obecności w przestrzeni pozafilmowej. Podjęto również próbę określenia jak czołówka z "Polskich dróg" wpłynęła na pozostałą twórczość Kurylewicza. W tej części pracy omówiono także strukturę i funkcje, jakie muzyka pełni w serialu "Polski drogi".

This thesis is dedicated to Andrzej Kurylewicz’s music to the TV series "Polish roads" directed by Janusz Morgenstern. Chapter I presents biographies of the creators: composer Andrzej Kurylewicz and director Janusz Morgenstern as well as the bios of the main cast. Furthermore, chapter I presents the circumstances of the series’ production and summarizes the plot of all episodes. Chapter II focuses on the analysis of the musical layer and includes the characteristics of main motifs and the description of all musical fragments occurring in the series. Selected musical fragments are analysed in relation to the (film) image. This chapter contains also information about instrumentation and the musical language used by the composer. Chapter III dwells on the stylistics of the musical layer and the composer’s idiosyncratic style. Additionally, attention is drawn to the exceptional popularity of the series and its main musical theme as attested by its presence in the non-cinematographic domain. In that chapter an attempt is undertaken to determine the impact of that particular musical motif on other musical works by Kurylewicz. Finally, the chapter discusses the structure and functions of music as featured in the TV series “Polish roads”.
