Hypercholesterolemia, one of the most common types of dyslipidemia, is a condition characterized by elevated levels of total cholesterol and/or its LDL fraction. Several types of hypercholesterolemia are distinguished: familial hypercholesterolemia, acquired hypercholesterolemia, maternal physiological hypercholesterolemia, and maternal supraphysiological hypercholesterolemia. The last two are are distinguishable only during pregnancy, while a pregnant woman may struggle any of them. The presence of hypercholesterolemia during pregnancy is associated with numerous adverse health outcomes for both the mother and the foetus, particularly in its pathological forms—familial, acquired, and supraphysiological. These consequences include, among others, accelerated atherosclerosis in normocholesterolemic children and preterm birth. Pregnancy is a unique state during which cholesterol-lowering medications are not used; thus, the only way to improve the lipid profile is through dietary interventions and physical activity. The aim of this study was to analyse the available literature on the impact of dietary interventions on the health of individuals suffering from hypercholesterolemia, with a particular focus on the pregnancy period. A review of current literature databases, including PubMed and Google Scholar, as well as nutritional guidelines, was conducted. The review considered both the physiological changes in lipid levels during pregnancy and the risks associated with excessive lipid increases. This paper presents the mechanisms of action of key dietary components in regulating lipid metabolism: dietary fibre, phytosterols, unsaturated fatty acids, and the impact of the Mediterranean and DASH diets. Literature data were also collected on obesity as a coexisting risk factor for dyslipidemia, and the role of the gut microbiota in lowering blood cholesterol levels was described. The gathered evidence indicates that a properly balanced diet—adjusted for the mother's BMI and pregnancy trimester, rich in fibre and plant-based fats, low in saturated fats and processed foods—can contribute to the improvement of the lipid profile in pregnant women. This, in turn, has a positive effect on foetal health and pregnancy outcomes. The diet should also comply with general nutritional recommendations for pregnant women, excluding products with a high risk of bacterial or parasitic contamination. The literature review also highlighted the crucial role of nutritional education in changing habits and improving lipid profiles.pl
Konsekwencje te to m.in: przyspieszenie naturalnych procesówmiażdżycy u dzieci normocholesterolemicznych, czy poród przedwczesny.
