The Portrayal of Women in Alice Munro’s Novel "Lives of Girls and Women"

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest analizie powieści „Dziewczęta i kobiety” autorstwa kanadyjskiej noblistki Alice Munro z perspektywy feminizmu oraz mieszczącej się w jego ramach fikcji feministycznej. Moim celem jest pokazanie, jak ważne wątki natury społecznej zostały ukryte w doświadczeniach głównej bohaterki – Del Jordan – oraz jakie znaczenie miały w tym kontekście uwarunkowania lat 60. i 70. XX wieku, kiedy druga fala feminizmu przeżywała swój rozkwit. Choć twórczość tej autorki rozumiana jako całość trudno poddaje się kwalifikacjom, to poszczególne jej dzieła wpisują się w określone kategorie, razem tworząc mozaikę możliwych do zgłębiania tematów. Wybrana książka koncentruje się na zagadnieniach kobiecości oraz społecznym kształtowaniu norm płciowych, co stanowi fundament dla analizy sylwetek bohaterów.

The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the novel „Lives of Girls and Women”, written by the Canadian Noble Prize Winner – Alice Munro. The book has been explored from the perspective of feminism and feminist fiction with the intention to present how significant social topics were interwoven into the life experience of the main character – Del Jordan. As a crucial context for my analysis, the role of the sociocultural reality of the 1960s and 1970s, when the second wave of feminism was at its peak, is included. Although it is difficult to unambiguously classify Munro’s oeuvre, her individual works fit into specific categories, together creating a mosaic of topics. The selected book focuses on issues of femininity and the social shaping of gender norms, which constitute the foundation for the analysis of the heroines' profiles.
