La più antica relazione medievale polacca del soggiorno in Terra Santa (1471)
The oldest medieval Polish source-account of the stay in the Holy Land (1471)
The following article discusses a previously unknown account of the stay of the provost of the Monastery of Canons Regular de Saxia in Krakow in the monastery of St. Catherine on Mount Sinai written in 1471. This detailed narrative is preserved in only one copy in the codex from the beginning of the 16th century belonging to the library of the Cistercian abbey in Krakow-Mogiła. It is the oldest and previously unrecognized account of the pilgrimage to the Holy Land written by an inhabitant of the medieval Kingdom of Poland. The analyzed description contains, inter alia, the information absent from other 14th and 15th century pilgrims relations from Western Europe. By way of illustration, it includes the principles of selecting a new superior of the Sinai congregation, in which the supernatural factor played a significant role. The published source text together with a commentary enriches significantly the existing knowledge about the pilgrimage to Mount Sinai in the Middle Ages
