Selected ancient Egyptian royal rituals as religious performances in the light of the theories of Ronald Grimes and Richard Schechner

Celem niniejszej pracy magisterskiej jest przedstawienie trzech rytuałów królewskich starożytnego Egiptu (związanych z świętami Opet, Sed i świętem Pięknej Doliny) oraz spojrzenie na nie przez pryzmat dwóch teorii 1.) teorii performansu Richarda Schechnera i 2.) teorii rytuału Ronalda Grimesa. W pracy wysunięto hipotezę mówiącą, że rytuały te mogły być postrzegane przez ówczesnych ludzi jako forma spektakli religijnych.Szczególna uwaga została zwrócona na zarysowanie teorii obu antropologów, którzy w swoich wywodach wskazują, że rytuał może stanowić część performansu. Poruszone i omówione w rozdziale pierwszym poglądy Schechnera i Grimesa w sposób istotny zarysowują problematykę rytuału w ujęciu antropologicznym.W pracy przedstawiono rekonstrukcję przebiegu świąt Opet, Sed oraz Święta Pięknej Doliny. Znajdują się w niej także rozważania na temat tego jak odprawiane podczas nich rytuały mogły być „odgrywane” przez faraona na przestrzeni wieków. W pracy zwrócono także uwagę na partycypację ludności nie należącej do najwyższych warstw społecznych. Większość Egipcjan miała okazję obserwowania władcy tylko podczas nielicznych świąt, które stanowiły dla nich rodzaj niecodziennego spektaklu.

The aim of this MA thesis is to present the three royal rituals of ancient Egypt (related to the Opet, Sed and Beautiful Valley festivals) and to look at them through the prism of two theories: 1.) Richard Schechner's performance theory and 2.) Ronald Grimes' theory of ritual. The thesis suggests that the above-mentioned rituals could have been seen by the people of the time, as a form of religious performances.Particular attention was paid to presenting the theory of both mentioned anthropologists, who in their arguments indicate that a ritual can be part of a performance. The views of Schechner and Grimes discussed in the first chapter, outline the issues of ritual from an anthropological perspective.The work presents a reconstruction of the Opet, Sed and Beautiful Valley festivals. It also includes considerations on how the rituals performed during the festivals, may have been "played" by the pharaohs over the centuries. The study also drew attention to the participation of people who did not belong to the highest social strata. Most Egyptians had the opportunity to observe their ruler only during a few holidays. For them it was a kind of unusual spectacle.
