Possibilities of using solar radiation for heliotherapy purposes based on examples of Polish health resorts

Celem pracy jest przedstawienie możliwości wykorzystania promieniowania słonecznego w celach lecznictwa helioterapeutycznego w polskich uzdrowiskach. W pracy zawarto syntezę historii helioterapii oraz chorób, w których dziedzina znajduje zastosowanie, zwrócono uwagę na istotę promieniowania słonecznego, a szczególnie nadfioletowego w helioterapii, scharakteryzowano usłonecznienie rzeczywiste oraz względne przedstawiając jego rozkład przestrzenny w Polsce. Opisano wpływ warunków środowiskowych na możliwość prowadzenia zabiegów helioterapeutycznych na świeżym powietrzu oraz przedstawiono możliwości ich prowadzenia w specjalnie przystosowanych do tego budynkach. Opracowano mapę makroregionów o najkorzystniejszych warunkach do helioterapii według pór roku. Przedstawiono położenie i scharakteryzowano warunki klimatyczne uzdrowisk położonych w obrębie tych makroregionów. W celu ukazania możliwości prowadzenia zabiegów helioterapii na świeżym powietrzu skupiono się na liczbie godzin ze Słońcem, liczbie dni z opadem, występowaniu dni z silnym wiatrem oraz liczbie dni gorących i mroźnych jako elementów istotnych w kontekście ludzkiego bilansu cieplnego. Na podstawie przeprowadzonej analizy warunków solarnych i środowiskowych w uzdrowiskach wyodrębniono grupy uzdrowisk o najkorzystniejszych warunkach do helioterapii.

The aim of the study is to present the possibilities of solar radiation used for heliotherapy purposes in Polish health resorts. Firstly, the history of heliotherapy and the diseases in which treatment this method is used was taken into account. Later on, the attention was drawn to the essence of solar radiation – especially ultraviolet radiation – in heliotherapy. The bright sunshine hours as well as relative sunshine duration were characterised by the demonstration of their spatial distribution in Poland. In addition, the impact of environmental conditions on the possibility of conducting heliotherapeutic treatments outdoors as well as and the possibilities of conducting them in specially adapted buildings were presented. Two maps were developed – the first one presenting macroregions with the most favourable conditions for heliotherapy with respect to seasons and the second one showing the location of health resorts located within these macroregions. The climatic conditions of those were characterised. With the aim of presenting the possibility of conducting heliotherapy outdoors, the attention was paid to the sunshine hours, the number of days with precipitation, the occurrence of days with strong winds and the number of hot and cold days as important elements in the context of human heat balance. Based on the analysis of solar and environmental conditions in health resorts, groups of those with the most favourable conditions for heliotherapy were identified.
