The Symbolic Duality of Cinnamon – Ra’iḥat al-qirfa by Samar Yazbek as a Stage of Contemporary Arabic “Lesbian” Novel’s Development

Sztywne zachodnie kategorie nie przystają do arabskiej rzeczywistości, a jako pokłosie kolonializmu generują zrozumiałe negatywne emocje. Choć przeszłość tego regionu charakteryzowała się płynnym i otwartym podejściem do ludzkiej seksualności, współcześnie nieheteronormatywne Arabki oraz muzułmanki mierzą się z wieloma trudnościami, takimi jak wymazywanie ich obecności. Jedną z walczących z tym zjawiskiem autorek jest Samar Yazbik. Syryjka nie stroni od kontrowersyjnych tematów i w Ra’iḥat al-qirfa przedstawia zróżnicowanie przedrewolucyjnego syryjskiego społeczeństwa od wewnątrz, z perspektywy kobiecej, na przykładzie skomplikowanego związku między panią a jej służącą. W części pierwszej pracy przybliżam postać autorki oraz kwestie związane z odbiorem miłości między kobietami w świecie arabskim kiedyś i dziś. Przyglądam się tworzonej na tym obszarze literaturze, występującym w niej queer bohaterkom, sposobowi ich przedstawiania oraz opiniom krytyków. Część druga poświęcona została analizie oraz interpretacji tytułowej powieści. Moim celem jest próba ukazania Zapachu cynamonu jako etapu rozwoju będącego wyłamaniem się z patriarchalnego schematu, zwiastunem nadchodzących zmian. Symbolika związana z cynamonem stanowi wymowne streszczenie przesłania tej szczególnej historii.

Rigid Western categories do not suit Arab reality and, as a consequence of colonialism, they generate understandable negative emotions. Though the past of these territories was marked by a fluid and open approach to the human sexuality, today non-heteronormative Arab and Muslim women face many challenges, such as an erasure of their existence. One of the authors fighting this practice is Samar Yazbek, who is not afraid of controversial topics. In Ra’iḥat al-qirfa she shows the diversity of pre-revolutionary Syrian society from the inner female perspective. She achieved that by using the example of the complicated relationship between the madam and her maid. In the first part of this thesis, I present the author’s profile and issues related to the perception of love between women in the Arab world, both in the past and nowadays. Then I take a closer look at the literature created there, its queer heroines, the way they are portrayed, and the opinions of critics. The second part of this thesis is devoted to an analysis and interpretation of the title novel. The purpose of my work is an attempt at showcasing The Smell of Cinnamon as a stage of development breaking out the patriarchal model – and a promise heralding the coming changes. The symbolism of cinnamon serves as a telling summary of the message of this peculiar story.
