The images of Jewish Fate. The History of Litvakia in Grigory Kanovich's Prose

Niniejsza praca podejmuje próbę pokazania, w jaki sposób Grigorij Kanowicz rekonstruuje w swojej twórczości doświadczenie historyczne litewskiej diaspory.Pierwsza część – Na rozdrożu. Litwakia wobec wyzwań epoki przełomu – jest poświęcona przede wszystkim powieściom, których akcja obejmuje okres przed wybuchem wojny niemiecko-radzieckiej – czasy ostatnich Romanowów i krótką egzystencję niepodległej Litwy, przerwaną inwazją Armii Czerwonej. Przedmiotem mojego zainteresowania jest obraz kryzysu wschodnioeuropejskich Żydów i zjawisk będących reakcją na wspomniany: asymilacji, emigracji, syjonizmu i socjalizmu.W drugiej części – Zagłada – przyglądam się tekstom tematyzującym (wprost lub aluzyjnie) Shoah, tragedię litewskich Żydów, a zarazem najczarniejszą kartę w historii Litwy. Staram się również odpowiedzieć na pytanie, w jaki sposób doświadczenie Holocaustu wpłynęło na kształt powieściowego projektu pisarza: jego rozumienie pamięci i obecne w tych tekstach wątki historiozoficzne

This thesis is an attempt to show how Grigorij Kanowicz reconstructs the Lithuanian’s diaspora historical experience in his writings.The first part – At the crossroads. Litvakia against the challenges of the breakthrough era – covers mostly novels, in which the action occurs before the oubreak of the German-Soviet war – in the period of both the last Romanovs and the brief existence of the independent Lithuania, later interrupted by the Red Army invasion. I focus on the depiction of the crisis of Eastern European Jews and the phenomena that occurred in response to it: assimilation, emigration, Zionism and socialism.In the second part – Holocaust – I look into the texts depicting (explicitly or allusively) the Shoah – the tragedy of the Lithuanian Jews and at the same time the darkest page in the history of Lithuania. I also attempt to answer the question, how the experience of the Holocaust influenced the shape of the writer's fictional project: his understanding of memory and the historiosophical threads present in these texts.
