Cuba in Spain in the 21st century : the issue of literature’s engagement in the debate centered around Belén Gopegui’s novel "El lado frío de la almohada" (2004)

Książka hiszpańskiej autorki Belén Gopegui, pt. El lado frio de la almohada (Zimna strona poduszki), wydanej w 2004, przywróciła do hiszpańskiej debaty publicznej kwestię zasadności debaty o losach Rewolucji Kubańskiej i, szerzej, debaty o projektach emancypacyjnych lewicy. Ówczesny kontekst historyczny - ataku Stanów Zjednoczonych na Irak - przyczynił się do zradykalizowania pozycji zwolenników i krytyków tej powieści. Czerpiąc z konwencji szpiegowskiej, powieść prowokuje do namysłu nad wymiarami zbrodni: czy można zabijać pojedynczych ludzi, jeśli ma to uratować szerokie grupy z globalnego Południa przed powolną śmiercią w warunkach turbokapitalistycznego wyzysku. The book El lado frío de la almohada (The Cold Side of the Pillow) by Spanish author Belén Gopegui, published in 2004, brought back into Spanish public debate the legitimacy of discussing the fate of the Cuban Revolution and, more broadly, the discourse around leftist emancipation projects. The historical context at the time-the United States' invasion of Iraq-contributed to the radicalization of both the novel’s supporters and its critics. Drawing on the conventions of spy fiction, the novel provokes reflection on the dimensions of crime: can the killing of individuals be justified if it serves to save large populations in the Global South from slow death under conditions of turbo-capitalist exploitation? The novel also aligns with the trend of politically and socially engaged literature in 21st-century Spain.
