The social aspects of modernity in Émile Zola’s “The Ladies’ Paradise” (1883)

Celem niniejszej pracy licencjackiej jest interpretacja powieści „Wszystko dla pań” Émile’a Zoli ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem motywu nowoczesności oraz wpływu, jaki wywiera ona na społeczeństwo. Pierwszy rozdział opisuje sposób funkcjonowania tytułowego sklepu oraz przytacza obrazy i mity wykorzystane do jego przedstawienia. Drugi rozdział zajmuje się bohaterami powieści oraz postawami jakie przyjmują w obliczu zmian. Trzeci rozdział skupia się na „nowoczesnej aktywności” i jej konsekwencjach. Z przeprowadzonej analizy wynika, iż Zola, dostrzegając niebezpieczeństwa płynące z postępu, pozostaje jego gorącym zwolennikiem.

The purpose of this bachelor’s thesis is to interpret the novel “The Ladies’ Paradise” by Émile Zola with a focus on the theme of modernity and the impact it has on the society. The first chapter describes the way in which the eponymous store functions and evokes the images and myths used to depict it. The second chapter is dedicated to the novel’s characters and the way they behave amidst the change. The third chapter focuses on the “modern activity” and its consequences. The analysis shows that Zola, while recognizing the dangers of progress, remains its ardent supporter.

L’objectif de ce mémoire de licence est d’interpréter le roman « Au Bonheur des Dames » d’Émile Zola en mettant l'accent sur le motif de la modernité et de son influence sur la société. Le premier chapitre traite du fonctionnement du magasin éponyme et évoque les images et les mythes que Zola utilise pour le décrire. Le deuxième chapitre s’occupe des personnages du roman ainsi que des comportements qu'ils adoptent face au changement. Le troisième chapitre se concentre sur « l’activité moderne » et ses conséquences. L'analyse montre que Zola, tout en reconnaissant les dangers du progrès, en reste un partisan fervent.
